UNI Nepal Liaison Council (UNI NLC), together with UNI Global Union affiliates the Union of Commerce Employees (UNICOM), All Nepal Sales, Shop and Petroleum Workers Union (ANSSPWU) and Nepal Commercial and Allied Workers Union (NCAWU), successfully organized a two-day workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal, on “Digital Organizing and Union Management”.

Held with the support of SASK Finland, the workshop aimed to strengthen workers’ digital skills and confidence in the commerce and service sectors while helping trade unions become more effective, transparent and digitally capable.

Opening the workshop, UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary Rajendra Acharya stressed that traditional approaches alone are no longer sufficient to advance the trade union movement in today’s rapidly changing world of work.

“Maximising the use of digital technology is essential to reach and effectively organize a new generation of workers. Digital organizing can also make trade unions more transparent, accountable and stronger while enhancing their collective bargaining capacity,” he said.

🚨 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Nearly 8,000 municipal cleaning workers are on an indefinite strike in Patna, Bihar, India. 🇮🇳

The action is being co-led by BRCKS, a UNI Global Union affiliate, and INTUC Bihar through the PMC Joint Employees Coordination Committee. The workers are demanding:

🔹 Regularization of daily-wage and contract employment
🔹 Transparent allocation of positions based on qualifications
🔹 An end to precarious outsourcing arrangements
🔹 Removal of administrative restrictions affecting employee benefits

The strike has severely disrupted door-to-door waste collection across Patna, resulting in significant waste accumulation in residential, commercial and transit areas. Monsoon conditions are further increasing public health concerns.

Union leaders maintain that the Patna Municipal Corporation has the administrative authority to address the demands through genuine negotiations, verification of service records, preparation of a transparent merit list and a time-bound regularization process.

UNI Asia & Pacific is closely monitoring developments. We stand in solidarity with BRCKS and the striking municipal cleaning workers in their call for secure employment, fair treatment and full access to employee benefits. ✊🏽

To end off the last day of July 2026, we celebrate our affiliate, the SDA, for their recent victory in obtaining a multi-million dollar settlement from a major discount supermarket chain in Australia. This settlement will see thousands of current and former ALDI workers getting a payment for pre and post shift work performed in the past for unpaid work outside rostered hours. Congratulations!

📢 ALDI workers in Australia win $55 million settlement for unpaid hours
Congratulations to our commerce affiliate, which has won a AU$55 million settlement for 32,000 current and former ALDI store and warehouse employees for claims of unpaid work outside rostered hours.

UNI Global Union President and SDA National Secretary Gerard Dwyer said: “This is a major result for tens of thousands of current and former ALDI workers. All workers should be paid for every minute they are required to work. The SDA backed workers from the beginning, funded this class action and pursued the case so that workers would receive the benefit of the outcome."

Kelly Boi, Class Action Lead Applicant and former ALDI store employee 2016 to 2023, said:

“I am proud that ALDI workers stood together and pursued this case. Work before and after shifts is now properly recognized and paid, making work at ALDI better. The proposed settlement also means I and thousands of other employees will receive a payment for pre and post shift work we performed in the past for no pay.”

UNI's Head of Commerce, Mathias Bolton, said:

"This landmark settlement shows that when workers stand together in a union, even the largest global retailers can be held accountable. Every worker deserves to be paid for every minute they work, and this victory sends a powerful message to employers everywhere: wage theft has consequences, and workers who organize can win justice. Congratulations to the SDA and to every current and former ALDI worker whose determination made this outcome possible."
