Dr Chang Siow Foong is a local veterinarian making nationwide impact.

Kudos!

An unsung hero of the 2015 Group B Strep outbreak.

It was Dr Chang Siow Foong (an aquatic animal vet presently Group Director, Animal and Veterinary Service with NParks) who first warned me about the practice of fish substitution in the food industry at the beginning of the outbreak. This led to my asking the SGH ID physicians to ask patients about raw fish intake, which in turn led to raw fish porridge being implicated.

Even with the food history we still had to find GBS in fish to complete the loop. Cultures are hit-and-miss, and were initially negative.

It was Siow Foong again who recommended direct PCR from fish extract, and it was a direct MLST from DNA extracted from a fish I had purchased at a nearby wet market that provided the first confirmation that we were on the right track.

Such a pleasure to finally meet him in person after all these years!

Brachycephalic (short-skulled / flat-faced) dog breeds are very popular in Singapore.

The physical form of these animals is now so different from the ancestors of the ‘dog’ that brachycephalic animals can face a number of health problems which can impact their quality of life.

The SVA is concerned about the welfare of brachycephalic animals and it is clear that a concerted effort by all stakeholders is needed to improve the welfare of these animals.

Brachycephalic (short-skulled / flat-faced) dog breeds are very popular in Singapore.
