Building patient advocacy from the ground up is never easy, especially when stigma, fear and uncertainty exist around lung cancer.

In this article, Dr Yi Lin Teh shares the journey of establishing Lung Cancer Education and Advocacy for Patients (LEAP) in Singapore, and the challenges faced along the way, from limited awareness of patient advocacy, to helping patients find community, trust, and a voice.
What started with small but consistent efforts in education, support groups, and patient navigation has since grown into a meaningful advocacy movement for lung cancer patients and caregivers in Singapore. A reminder that advocacy begins with listening, trust, and showing up consistently. 💙

Our patient advocates Mr Francis Goh, Dr Hanin Hussain and Mr Lee Wee-Hau participated in the CanPrevent Symposium. They shared their lived experience with lung cancer, engaging other patients, clinicians, researchers & policymakers to reimagine cancer prevention and early detection.

Key takeaways:
🫁 Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.
Prevention isn’t only about smoking—it’s also about early detection, inclusive screening, and recognising diverse risks, including for non‑ and never‑smokers.
We may not be able to move systems quickly—but we can move people to recognise their risk and take that first step toward screening.
Change starts when lived experience is heard—one conversation at a time. 💙

“It’s a learning experience. Stay positive, be hopeful, talk to the right people and always trust your doctors.” - Angelina, LEAP Lung Cancer Patient Advocate

From a single X-ray to a life-changing diagnosis, Angelina’s journey with lung cancer has been one of courage, resilience, and unwavering trust.

Through surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiotherapy, Angelina chose to focus instead of fear. She stayed informed, asked questions, and leaned on the right support when she needed it most. Today, she gives back, supporting fellow patients through patient advocacy and outreach, reminding others that knowledge is power and positivity builds resilience.

LEAP journeys alongside patients like Angelina, supporting them through navigation, patient support groups, and advocacy efforts, so no one has to face lung cancer alone.
