We are 2 days to the labour day rally! We ask...AI saves time, but for whom? For you the worker, or your boss? And what about the cost of all these data centres being built next to communities across the causeway? Is maximising your bosses' profits worth the devastating health impacts on the people living in Johor and your cognitive decline?

Statistically, the average working Singaporean reading this article is a white collar worker- otherwise known as PMET. Full article is in WMP's bio or go to tinyurl.com/whitecollarbargain.

This article and post was written and illustrated by burned out white collar workers- Kimberlyn Kiew and Kezia Gabriella.

Join us at this year's labour day rally on 1 May 3-7pm at Hong Lim Park as we unite with the working class of Singapore to demand for:

1. 888- no more than 8 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, and 8 hours for living life
2. A max 5 day work week for all
3. The right to disconnect, to now answer calls and texts after hours
4. At least 15 days paid annual leave for all
5. Basic amount of sick leave without needing MC
6. Dependent care leave and other leave entitlements for all
7. Raise basic wages for all- so that we can. reduce work hours (OT etc)

"Raj’s story, as told through this article, is a microcosm of the vast extent of discrimination and exploitation faced by migrant and F&B workers in Singapore. They sacrifice their leisure, their rest, their time with families and loved ones, their health; their tireless work is key to Singapore’s international reputation as a “food paradise.” Our resolutely pro-business institutions repay their sacrifices as you might expect: precarity, vulnerability to exploitation through schemes like kickbacks, and with the ever-present threat of deportation if they lose their jobs, no matter how long they’ve spent contributing to Singapore.

It is unclear how Raj’s story will end. Since quitting his job, he will have 30 days to find employment before he is forced to leave Singapore. If receives job offers, it is not certain he will be paid enough for his family to keep their house back in India. If he must leave Singapore, it is also uncertain how long it will take for him to see his wife again.

The lives of individuals the state deems “migrant workers” often hang in the wind just like this, and it is difficult for them to struggle for their rights due to their precarious status as transient workers. If we do believe in humanity, it is up to the rest of us, then, to struggle with them; to fight for their right to stay, and to strive for a world where work is no longer mere exploitation, but instead that which we own and love.

If that is a belief that you share, show up to this year’s Labour Day Rally to offer your support to the workers of Singapore. Many of the workers supported by Workers Make Possible are migrant workers, and are unable to enter Hong Lim Park. If you are Singaporean or a PR, please contribute your privilege to the struggle of vulnerable and marginalised groups."

“I work from 7am to 10pm. Except public holidays—not enough people and a lot more chickens come in... then I sometimes work until midnight.” This work schedule would be unimaginable for many Singaporeans. Not for Khalid*, 26, who considers his current job in food processing “very good” compared to the working conditions in his previous job.

If you're a burned out worker and/or support workers like Khalid to have more rest from work, join us at the labour day rally on 1 May 3-7pm at Hong Lim Park. Wear red!

While we appreciate MOM and TADM's clarification, they left out a few important points about Kawsar's case that prove our point. MOM has also emphasised that Kawsar is blacklisted from working in Singapore because he worked illegally, which harmed no one. Meanwhile, MOM has yet to specify what proportionate enforcement action was taken against his employer for engaging in wage theft, wrongfully terminating him, illegally deducting his and other workers' salaries, and feeding workers' rotten food. The company continues to operate in Singapore.

We have re-uploaded Kawsar's video to put it in context with the ongoing discourse about his case.

As we stated in the last slide, we look forward to MOM responding to our emails to verify information hereon and are more than willing to meet with them to discuss workers' issues such as the right to find employment after getting fired for filing a case against their boss. After all, shouldn't whistleblowers be protected from retaliation? But even after MOM's clarifications, the current practice seems to punish workers who whistleblow, preventing more workers from exposing the real rot in their workplaces.

As of 10 April 2026, this worker has not received a single cent from the liquidation of Twelve Cupcakes in October 2025. All affected workers will get only HALF their owed salaries (admitted by the liquidators) and many have suffered greatly from this sudden loss of income. Some workers question how the liquidators determined their owed salaries when many filed higher claims of owed salary.

The job market is particularly bad right now, and new hires are also struggling. At the Tak Tahu Town Hall & Art Jam on 28 March 2026, young people gathered to discuss these worries and express themselves through art. Here's a look at the event.
