🔋 Upcoming Technical Talk at NTU – Dr. Zhaoyu Wang

Join us for an insightful session on Blackstart Power Distribution Grids using Distributed Energy Resources and Dynamically Formed Microgrids, co-organized by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Singapore Chapter and the Centre for Power Engineering (CPE) at NTU.

📅 Date & Time: 15 August 2025, 10:30–11:30
📍 Venue: TR102, South Spine Level 1, NTU

Extreme weather events can cause prolonged outages in power distribution systems. With the increasing pe*******on of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), we now have new opportunities to accelerate blackstart and load restoration without relying solely on transmission systems. In this talk, Dr. Wang will present a holistic bottom-up blackstart framework that leverages battery energy storage-based grid-forming inverters (GFMIs) and solar energy-based grid-following inverters (GFLIs). The approach begins with multiple GFMIs forming microgrids, progressively expanding their boundaries while establishing cranking paths to GFLIs, synchronizing microgrids to create larger islands, and ultimately connecting the distribution system with the transmission grid to complete the restoration process. The framework incorporates new constraints on frequency stability, synchronization, and inrush currents to ensure practical implementation. Dr. Wang will also share insights from a real-world project to transform the City of Montezuma, Iowa, into the state’s first renewable microgrid with blackstart and self-healing capabilities.

About the speaker:
Dr. Zhaoyu Wang is a Professor at Iowa State University, specializing in optimization and data analytics in power distribution systems and microgrids. He has led over $24M in funded projects, received numerous prestigious awards, and serves in multiple leadership roles within IEEE PES.
