DIVISION N WORKSHOP SERIES
CONTEST RULES & JUDGING WORKSHOP
By Muhammad Nurhakim DTM

COULD ONE OVERLOOKED RULE CHANGE THE RESULT OF A SPEECH CONTEST?

A contestant delivers an outstanding speech. The audience loves it. The judges are impressed. But then comes a question nobody wants to hear: β€œWas a contest rule overlooked?”

Speech contests can be exciting. They can also be unforgiving when we miss the small details.

That is why District 80 Division N invites you to our Contest Rules & Judging Workshop. Happening on:
Date: Friday, 16 October 2026
(changed from 25 September)
Time: 8pm to 915pm
Place: Zoom

Whether you are a judge, Contest Chair, Organising Chair, roleholder or contestant, this workshop will help you understand what really matters before contest day.

πŸ”Ž KNOW THE RULES
You get to dive deep into Eligibility, Timing, Originality, Disqualification and Contest procedures. Some rules seem like small details. Until they suddenly become very big ones.

πŸ“ KNOW THE BALLOT
Are you judging the best speech according to the criteria, or simply the speech you enjoyed most? Learn what to look and listen for, how the criteria work and how to make a decision you can stand behind.

🧠 KNOW YOUR BIASES
The funniest speaker. The most confident speaker. The speaker we already know. Without realising it, these things can influence us. Good judges learn to recognise their preferences and come back to one thing: how to keep to the judging criteria without being subjective.

And if you are a contestant? Knowing the rules gives you one less thing to worry about when you step onto that contest stage.

A great contest is not just about finding a champion. It is about creating a contest that is fair, credible and professionally run.

πŸ† Know the Rules. Know the Ballot. Know Your Biases. Because sometimes, the smallest detail can make the biggest difference.

SPEECH EVALUATION WORKSHOP
18 Sep 2026 8pm
By Benjamin Leow, Division N Trainer

🎀 β€œGOOD SPEECH. WELL DONE!” This sounds encouraging. But does it actually help someone become a better speaker?

Giving feedback is easy. But giving feedback that someone can actually use is much harder. You need to listen carefully enough to spot what matters. You need to be specific enough to explain it. And you need to communicate it in a way that helps someone improve, without taking away their confidence.

That is what makes Speech Evaluation such a valuable skill.

And it goes far beyond Toastmasters. Think about the workplace. A manager gives feedback to a team member. A colleague reviews someone's presentation. A mentor helps a mentee improve. A leader coaches someone through a difficult situation.

In every case, the challenge is similar: How do you turn observation into feedback that creates growth?

This Friday, Division N Trainer Benjamin Leow will help us sharpen that skill at the District 80 Division N Speech Evaluation Workshop.

We will explore three areas:

πŸ”Ž Discover Your Gaps
What are you missing when you listen to a speech? Learn to listen beyond the words and identify what really affects the audience.

πŸ’‘ Develop Your Gifts
You don't have to evaluate like someone else. Learn to use your own observation, language and communication style to give feedback that is specific, balanced and useful.

πŸš€ Drive Your Growth
Here's the interesting part. The more you learn to evaluate others, the more you begin to evaluate yourself. You start to take note structure. You start to take note of delivery. You notice whether a message connects. And slowly, you become a better communicator too.

So whether you are doing your first speech evaluation, preparing for an Evaluation Contest, developing your leadership skills, or simply want to become better at giving constructive feedback, this workshop is for you.

Don't just learn how to tell someone: β€œThat was a good speech.”

Learn how to tell them: β€œHere's what worked. Here's what could be stronger. And here's how you can take it to the next level.”

Because great feedback doesn't simply judge performance. It helps people grow exponentially as speakers.

WHAT A SMASHING LANGUAGE EVALUATION WORKSHOP!

Muhammad Nurhakim DTM and Norizah Riduan, you certainly gave us plenty to think about, laugh about and bring back to our clubs!

Those who attended walked away with a treasure chest of practical ideas. And here's one gem we won't forget:
A Language Evaluator is not the language police! We're not there waiting to catch every grammatical slip.
We're there to elevate the language, elevate the speaker and elevate the meeting.

What else did we discover?
1.Listen for patterns of speech that bring colours, clarity and conviction to an idea, feeling or concept.
2.We absolutely loved the elephant analogy for the Language Evaluator's multitasking superpowers: listening, logging and elevating!
3.We learnt how structured, ready-made templates can make Language Evaluation much less intimidating.
4.We discovered that Language Evaluation doesn't always have to be a one-person show. Why not get several members involved, with each listening for and presenting a different aspect of language?

And here's something for anyone who has ever thought: β€œMy English isn't good enough to be Language Evaluator!"
You DON'T need a Master's degree in English. You need curiosity, willingness and the courage to learn.

Start as a novice. Keep practicing. Keep listening. Keep learning. One day, you may find yourself mentoring others or even training the next generation of Language Evaluators.

So the next time someone β€œarrows” you to take the role… Don't run! Take up the challenge. Listen. Learn. Elevate.
And help your fellow Toastmasters discover just how powerful their words can be.

And there's more coming! Our next workshop via turns the spotlight on SPEECH EVALUATION.

Stay tuned! Because in Division N, we don't just speak to become better speakers. We learn together so we can help one another become better.

DIVISION N WORKSHOP SERIES
Language Evaluation Workshop
Conducted by Muhammad Nurhakim DTM and Norizah Riduan

Think being a Language Evaluator is just about catching bad grammar? Think again!

A great Language Evaluator listens for something much bigger:
What made those words WORK?
Why did one phrase grab everyone's attention?
Why did another sentence sound awkward?
Was that repetition deliberate?
Could a better word have made the message stronger?

Come and discover the craft behind evaluating language at the District 80 Division N Language Evaluation Workshop!

According to Toastmasters International, the Language Evaluator role helps us develop our vocabulary, grammar, critical listening and evaluation skills.

You will learn how to:
✨ Spot rhetorical devices that make speeches memorable
✨ Recognize powerful word choices and phrases worth highlighting
✨ Select a great Word of the Day that is interesting, challenging AND usable
✨ Catch awkward sentence structures, grammar and language issues
✨ Suggest better ways of expressing an idea
✨ Give feedback that is specific, useful and encouraging

Because language evaluation shouldn't sound like an English teacher marking an exam. It should help speakers understand:
β€œThis worked brilliantly. Here's why.” and β€œThis could be even stronger. Here's how.”

That is where real learning happens.

GET TO KNOW OUR DIVISION N COUNCIL MEMBERS
Featuring Adelfa Mae Abregana (Affee) Division N Director

A DIVISION WHERE EVERYONE HAS THE SPACE TO GROW AND SHINE πŸ’š

That is the Division N that Adelfa Mae Abregana (Affee), Division N Director, hopes to build together with every Toastmaster this term.

For Affee, Division N should be more than a collection of clubs. It should be an inclusive community where people feel respected, valued and empowered to contribute, and where they find the courage to stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones.

That aspiration comes alive in this term's theme:

🌟 TO LEAD. TO INSPIRE. TO MAKE AN IMPACT.

Affee believes there is a leader within every Toastmaster.

We lead when our actions inspire someone else to try.

We lead when we encourage someone to believe in themselves.

And we lead when we help others become better versions of who they already are.

So, what kind of leadership does Affee hope to bring to Division N?

Lead with Vision
Be the guiding star that gives people direction and brings everyone towards a shared purpose.

Lead with Heart
Listen, empathise and understand what motivates the people around you. Strong teams are built on strong human connections.

πŸ™ Lead with Humility
Be willing to learn from others and give others room to shine. Humility strengthens relationships and brings teams closer together.

Lead by Example
Let actions speak. When people see you practising what you believe in, trust follows.

But there is another side of Affee beyond Toastmasters!

When life gets overwhelming, she heads out for a run or does strength exercises to recharge.

Since becoming vegan, preparing plant-based meals has become one of her favourite activities.

Her movie tastes stretch from action and sci-fi to romcoms.

And yes, sometimes she sings and plays the guitar, too!

She also enjoys listening to wellness podcasts about keeping the mind, body and spirit. One of her aspirations beyond Toastmasters is to contribute, in her own little ways, towards making the world a happier and healthier place.

And perhaps that tells us something about the journey she envisions for Division N, too.

Grow ourselves. Lift others. Make a difference together.

Here's to a term of stepping forward, supporting one another and discovering just how much impact each of us can make.
