"The impact of nuclear weapons use would be grave and would require a strong response – and therefore could escalate quickly to become a large-scale regional war and possibly all-out nuclear war."

Putin has moved the goalposts of the conditions under which Russia would launch a first nuclear strike. His threats are deliberately ambiguous and dangerous.

"As far back as 2009 NGOs were warning of the role conflict minerals play in fueling violence in the DRC. This negative trend persists unabated as exemplified by August 2022 reports of attacks by militant groups against the mining sector. Foreign ownership of mines does not prevent them from being attacked by militants either, specifically targeted by M23. Some of the attacks against mines have been carried out by CODECO as well."

There are several actors driving insecurity in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). For instance, the Islamic State Central African Province (ISCAP) has an obvious religious orientation and seeks to expand the Caliphate in Central Africa

"Finally, EAC countries should not hesitate to end operations if they fail to achieve their stated objectives, and especially if they find they are worsening rather than improve the security situation in eastern DRC. To the extent they lend assistance, organisations like the AU and EU should stay carefully attuned to reports from the field and be prepared to curtail their support should the intervention go awry.

The UN Security Council should be very cautious about appearing to endorse the mission, at least until it has a track record demonstrating that it is doing more good than harm. Civilians in the eastern DRC have suffered repeated bouts of armed violence for nearly three decades. While efforts to address their plight are laudable in principle, they need to be workable in practice to merit continuation and support."

"On August 5, an open letter was presented to the review conference in New York which was signed by over 1,400 political, military and religious leaders, as well as legislators, academics, scientists, business leaders, youth, lawyers, artists, Nobel Laureates and other representatives of civil society, among them the Executive Director of Democracy Without Borders, Andreas Bummel.

The letter, organized by the No First Use campaign, calls on governments to “end the nuclear arms race and phase out the role of nuclear weapons in security policies starting with no-first-use” and to “commit to a timebound framework for the global elimination of nuclear weapons no later than 2045.”

The tenth Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty opened in early August with a stark warning from UN Secretary-General António Guterres of nuclear danger “not seen since the height...

"The peace agreement, between President Salva Kiir's group and the SPLM/A-IO Kit-Gwang faction led by General Simon Gatwech, provided for the integration of Kit-Gwang forces into the national army, the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF)."

An advance team of the SPLM/A-IO Kit-Gwang faction led by General Simon Gatwech has complained that the implementation of the peace agreement had not yet made any progress.
