Project Playground

Project Playground Our vision is a world where every child and youth grow up with a belief in the future Project Playground creates hope for the future. Create Belief.

It makes a lasting, positive impact on children’s lives and reduces the risk of vulnerability and social exclusion. By offering meaningful leisure activities, the organization empowers children and young people in both Sweden and South Africa. With a holistic approach, combining education, structured activities led by qualified leaders, and tailored support, Project Playground provides a safe have

n and new perspectives for children and young people who need it most. Project Playground was founded in 2010 by H.R.H. Princess Sofia and Frida Vesterberg with the aim of improving life opportunities for children and young people in vulnerable communities. The organization began its operations in the township of Langa, just outside Cape Town, South Africa, where it offered a safe environment away from the streets, providing children with opportunities to develop through play, sports, and educational programs. Since then, Project Playground has expanded to Sweden, establishing a presence in Hallonbergen and soon Skärholmen outside Stockholm.

A few weeks ago, we continued our STEAM initiative together with our engaged partner SEB, who hosted two inspiring workshops for students from Vittra Brotorp. The sessions took place in SEB’s Solna office and were designed to connect learning, creativity, and real-world societal challenges through hands-on experiences.

Across both workshops, students were invited into different perspectives on innovation, economy, and society. One group worked in teams to develop their own “future companies”, tackling real societal challenges through ideas that combined creativity, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Another group explored themes such as value, ownership, and saving through interactive exercises that sparked reflection on how everyday decisions connect to long-term opportunities. As part of the experience, the students were also invited on a guided art tour through SEB’s office, exploring how art and culture can inspire creativity and new perspectives.

Our STEAM initiative combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to give young people practical opportunities to explore creativity, collaboration, and future-oriented thinking through real-world challenges and experiences.

As SEB representative Matilda Gullbo shared:

“Initiativ som kombinerar alla delar inom STEAM utvecklar kreativitet, problemlösning och kritiskt tänkande - kompetenser som är avgörande i ett snabbt föränderligt samhälle. Genom att kombinera teknik, konst och samhällsperspektiv får unga en bredare förståelse för hur de kan bidra till både sin egen framtid och till en mer hållbar utveckling.”

Collaborations like this create valuable opportunities for students to engage with new ideas, perspectives, and environments beyond the classroom. By bringing together schools, partners, and professionals from different fields, the initiative helps make learning more tangible and gives students insight into how creativity, innovation, and critical thinking can be applied in real-world contexts.

A warm thank you to SEB for hosting valuable workshops and for generously sharing your time, knowledge, and space with the students as part of our STEAM initiative🧩💚

New turf for play in Langa⚽️

centre in Langa, Cape Town now has a newly replaced turf, after more than a decade of constant use through football, activities, and everyday life at the centre.

The new surface creates safer and more reliable conditions for sport and play, allowing the field to once again fully support the energy and activity that happens here every day. For the children, it means more opportunities to play, learn sports, engage in activities and spend time together.

A sincere thank you to Ipco for making this replacement possible!💚 Your support has had a direct and visible impact on our centre in Langa and on the hundreds of children who use the turf every week. It is thanks to partnerships like this that we are able to maintain and improve safe, active spaces where children can grow, move, and build confidence through play.

If your company is also interested in contributing to long-term, tangible impact for children and young people, we would love to connect. Partnerships like this make a real difference for the children and youth we work with. Contact us here: https://linktr.ee/projplayground

A few weeks ago, we continued our STEAM initiative together with one of our main partners, Saab, through a hands-on workshop with year 9 students from Vittra Brotorp, one of our partner schools in Hallonbergen.

The day started with an inspiring session by astronaut Christer Fuglesang, who shared his experiences from space and what it takes to work in extreme environments. Saab’s team also gave the students insight into their work within innovation and development, connecting it to real-world engineering and future possibilities.

The students then took on the challenge “Chasing Air” - working in teams to design and build glider aircrafts using limited materials. Throughout the session, they tested and refined their designs, learning how creativity, problem-solving and collaboration drive innovation.

The workshop ended with a final flight challenge and a joint reflection on material choices, sustainability, teamwork and how this way of working can be applied in both school and future careers.

As Saab’s Head of Group Communication & Sustainability, Viktor Wallström, reflected on the importance of initiatives like this:

“I en värld av vikande intresse för STEAM-ämnena ser vi, bland annat i egenskap av Sveriges största arbetsgivare för ingenjörer, vikten av att fortsätta bygga det intresset och kunskapen på alla plan i samhället. Det har varit en framgångsfaktor för Sverige som nation och är anledningen till att vi har så många innovativa företag samt goda förutsättningar för en hållbar utveckling framåt.”

A big thank you to Saab for being a committed main partner to Project Playground, for actively taking part in our STEAM initiative, and for helping us create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that connect education with the real world.

Last week it was time for another Impact Youth - a networking event for young people, by young people, organized by Idéer för livet, Project Playground Sverige, Right By Me and WWF Sweden Youth🌟

The event is grounded in the Inner Development Goals (IDGs), focusing on the inner skills needed to shape a more sustainable and inclusive future - such as self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking and collaboration.

The day kicked off with name bingo, creating a relaxed space for participants to connect, followed by a theatre exercise led by a youth leader from Project Playground where they explored and expressed emotions - strengthening both self-awareness and the confidence to share with others.

Through interactive workshops, participants then dove deeper into the five dimensions of the inner development goals – BEING, THINKING, RELATING, COLLABORATING and ACTING. Together with Right By Me, youth leaders from Project Playground also hosted a workshop in project management, where ideas took shape and participants explored how to create cultural events that engages other young people.

The evening wrapped up with a dinner and a creative Sip & Paint session, organized by Project Playground and Rise and Change Sweden - a moment for connection and creative expression🎨

A big thank you to all the amazing young people who made the day so meaningful and to Idéer för livet, Right By Me, WWF Sweden Youth and Rise and Change Sweden for a great collaboration. And an extra thanks to Right By Me for all the fantastic photos! 📸

We are thrilled to welcome Donat to Project Playground Sweden!

Donat began volunteering with us in autumn 2025 and has, since February 2026, been working part-time as a Youth Coach in Hallonbergen. In this role, he works closely with the children in our programmes, with a strong commitment to supporting their growth and well-being. For Donat, this work is especially meaningful because he deeply recognises the value of having access to meaningful activities, a sense of community, and supportive adults who encourage young people to believe in themselves.

He is deeply inspired by Project Playground’s commitment to creating safe and inclusive spaces where children can grow, feel included, and discover their potential. In a time when children’s rights risk being overlooked, Donat believes organisations like ours are more important than ever to ensure that children’s rights remain protected and prioritised.

This summer, Donat will also volunteer with Project Playground in Langa, South Africa, seeing it as an opportunity to gain new perspectives, deepen his understanding of the organisation’s work, and bring that learning back to support our programmes in Sweden.

We are very happy to have Donat as part of the team and look forward to the commitment and perspective he brings to our work with children and young people.

Welcome to Project Playground, Donat!🧩

Creative Workshops Empowering Young Minds at Project Playground!🧩

Last week, our Fundraising Manager, Ulrika Sundblad, joined a workshop at Project Playground Sweden's after-school program in Hallonbergen. The activity encouraged teamwork, communication, and creative problem-solving - key skills within the IDG framework, helping kids relate through collaboration and think creatively.

This is just one of many activities taking place this spring in Hallonbergen. Thanks to our partners Saab, SEB and Wallenstam AB, young participants continue to explore our STEAM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Through hands-on workshops led by experienced professionals from leading companies, they develop curiosity and creativity while gaining practical experience.

We are incredibly grateful to our partners, not only for making our after-school programs possible but also for actively engaging with young people and helping us create meaningful activities that empower the next generation.
