Throughout this season, we’ve been working on mapping and excavating what appears to be an early Christian cemetery. It’s proved to be very dusty, but interesting, work and we even found a fragment of a reused Greek stela!

One of our project goals is to understand Nuri better as a landscape. As part of that goal, we wanted to identify the location of a temple last seen by Reisner in the early 1900s. This will allow us to update the maps and plans published in Dunham’s publication of Nuri, in addition to better understanding this important monument.

This season is focusing on test excavations to pinpoint the location and depth of the temple and hopefully next season we’ll start to clear the entire structure. It’s taken a fair bit of digging but we’ve found a corner! Stay tuned for more pics!

We’ve found some beautiful pottery so far this season! Vessels like these seem to have been purposefully broken and used to line Meroitic burials. They’ve definitely been keeping our ceramicist busy.

Digging at Nuri is a bit tricky. The sand is so loose it is nearly impossible to get straight walls in your excavation units. You do get really beautiful sand-falls though and with all the mica in the sand, they’re super sparkly too!
