In Sudan’s White Nile State, war and displacement have forced children out of school and onto the streets. It looked like the end of the road for education - but perhaps what the children lacked in formal structures could be made up for with imagination?

What if the streets could become the school?

This question shaped an idea that lead to an initiative; the ‘Street Classroom’. A bold endeavour that turns pavements into places of learning - beacons for hope and peace 🕊️

Started by local volunteers, it’s now a lifeline for nearly 200 children, offering education, meals, and a chance to dream again.

DanChurchAid works with the Sudanese NGO SUDO Sudan Social Development Organization White Nile who supports some 130 mutual aid groups with capacity-strengthening and funding.

The Street Classroom initiative is one of several initiatives supported by SUDO with funding from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund.

في يوم الخميس الموافق9/10/2025 كان اختتام ورشة المعالجة المجتمعية لسوء التغذية الشديد الحاد (CMAM) بتوزيع الشهادات على المشاركين، تقديراً لمساهمتهم في دعم صحة الأطفال وتعزيز دور المجتمع في الاستجابة التغذوية.
شهد اليوم الختامي حضور ممثل اليونسيف د. حامد فضل الله حامد، ومفوض العون الإنساني د. محمد إدريس، ومديرة إدارة برنامج التغذية الأستاذة حنان الدومة، ومديرة منظمة سودو – مكتب النيل الأبيض الأستاذة رانيا خالد عمر.

يأتي هذا النشاط في إطار مشروع تعزيز تقديم خدمات الصحة والتغذية المتكاملة للسكان الأكثر حاجة في ولاية النيل الأبيض، تنفيذ منظمة سودو بالشراكة مع وزارة الصحة وبدعم من اليونسيف، تأكيداً لأهمية الشراكة والعمل المشترك لحماية الأطفال وتحسين فرص بقائهم ونموهم.

The Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) Workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants, in recognition of their efforts to strengthen child health and community-based nutrition responses.
The closing ceremony was attended by UNICEF Representative Dr. Hamed Fadlallah Hamed, Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Dr. Mohamed Idris, Director of the Nutrition Programme Ms. Hanan Al-Douma, and SUDO Organization White Nile Office Director Ms. Rania Khalid Omar.

This activity was implemented under the project to strengthen integrated health and nutrition services for the most vulnerable populations in White Nile State, implemented by SUDO Organization in partnership with the Ministry of Health and supported by UNICEF, reinforcing the value of collaboration in delivering equitable and sustainable health and nutrition services.

نفذت منظمة سودو تدريب معززي الإصحاح وجودة وسلامة المياه، بالتنسيق مع وزارة الصحة والتنمية الاجتماعية – ولاية شمال كردفان، وبدعم من اليونيسف.
يهدف التدريب إلى تعزيز الممارسات الصحية الآمنة، وبناء قدرات المجتمع المحلي، بما يسهم في حماية صحة الأطفال وتحسين بيئة المياه والإصحاح في المجتمعات الأكثر حاجة.

SUDO Organization, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Social Development – North Kordofan State, and with support by UNICEF, conducted a training for Sanitation Promoters on Water Quality and Safety.
The training aims to strengthen safe hygiene practices and build community capacities, contributing to the protection of children’s health and the improvement of water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in the most vulnerable communities

مشروع تعزيز الرفاه المتكامل للأطفال من خلال التمكين المحلي للمجتمعات الأكثر حوجة وبدعم من اليونيسف، نفذت سودو تدريباً متخصصاً لفرق الدعم من الأقران في قلي وتندلتي بولاية النيل الأبيض حول الحماية والعنف المبني على النوع.
يهدف التدريب إلى تمكين الشباب لتقديم الدعم النفسي والاجتماعي للأطفال، وحمايتهم من العنف، وتعزيز بيئة آمنة وشاملة داخل المجتمع.

ضمن مشروع تعزيز الرفاه المتكامل للأطفال، نفذت منظمة سودو بدعم من اليونسف تدريبات متخصصة لشبكات حماية الأطفال في محليتي قلي وتندلتي.
ركزت التدريبات على رفع الوعي بأشكال العنف، المخاطر التي قد يتعرض لها الأطفال، والدعم النفسي والاجتماعي.
وتأتي هذه الجهود لتعزيز قدرة المجتمع على حماية الأطفال الأكثر عرضة للمخاطر.

As part of the Integrated Child Well-being Project, SUDO—supported by UNICEF—conducted specialized training sessions for Child Protection Networks in Guli and Tendelti.
The sessions focused on increasing awareness of different forms of violence, potential risks faced by children, and basic psychosocial support skills.
These efforts strengthen community-based protection systems for the most vulnerable children.

في ولاية النيل الأبيض، تواصل منظمة سودو بالشراكة مع وزارة الصحة وبدعم من اليونسيف تنفيذ جلسات "أم لِأم" ضمن مشروع خدمات الصحة والتغذية المتكاملة.
تهدف هذه الجلسات إلى تمكين الأمهات من تبادل الخبرات والمعلومات حول تغذية الرضع وصغار الأطفال، وتعزيز الممارسات الصحية السليمة داخل المجتمع.

تُسهم هذه الجلسات في بناء شبكة دعم بين الأمهات، وتوفير مساحة آمنة للنقاش وتبادل التجارب حول الرضاعة الطبيعية، التغذية السليمة، النظافة، ومتابعة صحة الأطفال.
كما يعمل فريق سودو على تسهيل الجلسات وتقديم التوعية اللازمة لضمان أن تحصل كل أم على المعلومات الصحيحة التي تساعدها في دعم نمو أطفالها بشكل صحي وآمن.

معًا نعمل لتحسين صحة الأمهات والأطفال، وتعزيز قدرة المجتمع على توفير بيئة داعمة للأسر في كل مناطق ولاية النيل الأبيض.

In White Nile State, SUDO, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and with support b UNICEF, continues to implement Mother-to-Mother Support Groups as part of the Integrated Health and Nutrition Services Project.
These sessions aim to empower mothers through shared learning, open discussions, and practical guidance on infant and young child feeding, as well as essential health practices.

The groups create a safe and supportive space where mothers can exchange experiences on breastfeeding, proper nutrition, hygiene, and child health follow-up.
SUDO’s team facilitates the sessions and provides accurate, evidence-based information to ensure that every mother receives the support she needs to help her children grow in a healthy and safe environment.

Together, we are strengthening community resilience and improving the well-being of mothers and children across White Nile State.

📦 ترحيل الإمداد الطبي والغذائي:

في إطار أنشطة مشروع دعم خدمات الصحة والتغذية المتكاملة بولاية النيل الأبيض، نفّذت منظمة سودو (SUDO) بدعم من منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة – اليونيسف (UNICEF) عملية ترحيل للإمدادات الطبية والغذائية إلى المرافق الصحية والمجتمعات المستهدفة، ضمن الجهود الرامية لضمان استمرارية تقديم الخدمات الصحية والتغذوية للأطفال والأمهات.
تشمل الإمدادات:
✅ مستلزمات علاج سوء التغذية
✅ مسحوق المغذّيات الدقيقة (MNP)
✅ أدوات القياس والمتابعة التغذوية
✅ مواد التوعية الصحية والتغذوية
وتأتي هذه الخطوة لتعزيز جاهزية المرافق الصحية ودعم الاستجابة المجتمعية.

📦 Medical and Nutrition Supplies Transportation
As part of the Integrated Health and Nutrition Support Project in White Nile State, SUDO Organization, with support by UNICEF, conducted the transportation of medical and nutrition supplies to health facilities and target communities to ensure continuous provision of essential services to mothers and children.
The supplies included:
✅ Therapeutic nutrition items
✅ Micronutrient Powder (MNP)
✅ Nutrition monitoring tools
✅ Health and nutrition awareness materials
This activity strengthens health facility readiness and community response capacity

ورشة تدريب المتطوعين على الوصول المجتمعي:

في إطار مشروع دعم خدمات الصحة والتغذية المتكاملة بولاية النيل الأبيض، تنفّذ منظمة سودو (SUDO) بدعم من منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة – اليونيسف (UNICEF) ورشة تدريبية تستهدف المتطوعين والمنشطين المجتمعيين بهدف:
✅ تطوير مهارات التواصل المجتمعي
✅ تخطيط وتنفيذ أنشطة التوعية المنزلية والجلسات الجماعية
✅ آليات تحديد الفئات الأكثر احتياجاً
✅ مهارات الإحالة والمتابعة المجتمعية
✅ توثيق الأنشطة ورفع التقارير
تهدف الورشة إلى تعزيز قدرة المتطوعين على الوصول الفعّال إلى المجتمعات المستهدفة ودعم الأسر بالخدمات الصحية والتغذويه الملائمه

📣 Volunteer Training Workshop on Community Outreach
As part of the Integrated Health and Nutrition Support Project in White Nile State, SUDO Organization, with support by UNICEF, is conducting a training workshop for volunteers and community mobilizers aiming to:
✅ Strengthen community communication skills
✅ Plan and implement home visits and group awareness sessions
✅ Identify vulnerable groups
✅ Apply referral and follow-up mechanisms
✅ Improve documentation and reporting
The workshop aims to strengthen volunteers’ capacity for effective community outreach and service delivery.
