Practical Action Sudan A global charity putting practical ideas to work so the world’s most vulnerable can adapt and thrive.

The work undertaken by Practical Action Sudan (commencing in 1976) is to achieve the organisation’s vision of "a sustainable world free of poverty and injustice in which technology is used for the benefit of all". Practical Action Sudan (Kassala, Darfur and Blue Nile) is using technology in innovative interventions and putting the organisation’s mission into practice by translating it into a devel

opment approach to reach Sudan’s vision: sustainable community-managed development. Our Work:

Practical Action Sudan’s work is structured under three organizational themes:
• Energy
• Food security, livelihoods and disaster risk reduction
• Urban sanitation

We also have four cross-cutting themes run across the programmes: Access to markets, Climate change, Civil society and Gender. As a Knowledge Broker we offer technical information through the Practical Answers service (http://answers.practicalaction.org/).

وفي ولاية كسلا، أدى هطول الأمطار غير المنتظم والتكلفة العالية لطلمبات الديزل إلى ترك الأراضي التي كانت منتجة في يوم من الأيام على شفا التصحر. ولم يؤد الصراع المستمر إلا إلى تفاقم نضال المزارعين وأسرهم. وبدعم من الاتحاد الأوروبي، قامت منظمة Practical Action بتركيب ١٤ نظاما للري يعمل بالطاقة الشمسية - مما يوفر مصدر موثوق للمياه لري الأراضي الزراعية، واستعادة النظم البيئية الهشة، ومساعدة المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة مثل الريح على إعادة بناء سبل دخلهم.

In Kassala State, irregular rainfall and the high cost of diesel pumps have left once-productive land on the brink of desertification. Ongoing conflict has only worsened the struggle of farmers and their families.
With EU support, Practical Action is introducing 14solar-powered irrigation systems — bringing reliable water to farmlands, restoring fragile ecosystems, and helping smallholder farmers like Alrayah rebuild their livelihoods.

Together, we’re restoring barren land to strengthen food security and resilience.

🌱 "فقدت وظيفتي وأصبحت جالسة في المنزل. بعد المشاركة في ورش العمل، بدأت أفكر في الزراعة كخيار مناسب لي أيضا". — شيراز ، صاحبة مشروع صغير و مزارعة

أجبرت عائلة شيراز على الفرار من منزلها في الخرطوم وترك حياتها المهنية في قطاع التأمين، وهي واحدة من آلاف العائلات النازحة التي تبحث عن ملجأ في شرق السودان. تركت الحرب المستمرة وعدم الاستقرار الاقتصادي الكثيرين يكافحون من أجل إعالة أسرهم.

وبدعم من الاتحاد الأوروبي، توفر مبادرة Practical Action التدريب و البذور والأدوات لمساعدة أكثر من 6,000 نازح مثل شيراز على إعادة بناء حياتهم. إنهم يتعلمون الآن تقنيات الزراعة وتصنيع الأغذية وإنتاج الألبان والحرف اليدوية - بهدف تنويع مصادر الدخل وتحسين الوصول إلى الغذاء وذلك لبناء مستقبل مستدام لأسرهم ومجتمعاتهم.

🌱” I lost my job and found myself just sitting at home. After taking part in these workshops, I started considering farming as an option for me too.”

Forced to flee her home in Khartoum and leave behind her career in the insurance industry, Shiraz’s family is one of thousands of displaced families seeking refuge in eastern Sudan. Ongoing war and economic instability have left many struggling to provide for their families.

With EU support, Practical Action is providing training, seeds, and tools to help over 6,000 displaced people like Shiraz rebuild their lives. They are now learning farming techniques, food processing, dairy production, and handicrafts — diversifying income sources, improving access to food, and building a sustainable future for their families and communities.

💰💡 Empowering Communities Through Savings & Lending! 💡💰

In Halfa and Wad Alhilou, we’re building financial resilience from the ground up! With the support of a specialized facilitator from the Microfinance Institution, we’ve formed and trained Village Savings and Lending (VSL) groups, giving communities the tools to save, invest, and grow together.

Here’s what the training covered:
✅ How to form and organize savings & credit groups and link them to microfinance services
✅ Managing savings and lending funds for sustainability
✅ Understanding revolving funds and maximizing benefits
✅ Running small businesses and income-generating activities
✅ Basic bookkeeping and financial documentation

150 people trained, including 126 women and 24 men are now ready to turn knowledge into action and dreams into reality!

في حلفا ووَد الحِليّو، نبني الصمود المالي من الأساس! بدعم من مدرب متخصص من مؤسسة التمويل الأصغر، قمنا بتشكيل وتدريب مجموعات الادخار والإقراض، لمنح المجتمعات الأدوات التي تساعدهم على الادخار، الاستثمار، والنمو معًا.

غطت الدورات التدريبية المحاور التالية:
✅ تشكيل وتنظيم مجموعات الادخار والإقراض وربطها بخدمات التمويل الأصغر
✅ إدارة صناديق الادخار والإقراض وضمان استدامتها
✅ مفهوم صناديق التمويل الدوارة وكيفية تعظيم الفائدة للأعضاء
✅ إدارة المشاريع الصغيرة والأنشطة المدرة للدخل
✅ مسك الدفاتر الأساسية وتوثيق المعاملات المالية

تم تدريب 150 شخصًا، من بينهم 126 امرأة و24 رجلًا، وهم الآن جاهزون لتحويل المعرفة إلى عمل، والأحلام إلى واقع!

Today, we celebrate the power of food security and resilience. In Kassala, Imtithal is living proof that knowledge and solidarity can transform lives.

A mother of five and a member of Al-Haram Agricultural Association, Imtithal faced climate challenges, power cuts, and seed shortages—while hosting 35 displaced people in her home during crisis. Farming seemed impossible, but she refused to give up.

Through training in drip irrigation, organic fertilizer, and Farmer Field Schools, plus a study visit to Tanzania, she learned new techniques to boost yields and reduce waste. Today, Imtithal is thriving—with a bold dream to export within two years!
Her story reminds us: when farmers get the right tools and timely support, they can turn crisis into opportunity.

اليوم نحتفل بقوة الأمن الغذائي والصمود. في كسلا، إمتثال مثال حي على أن المعرفة والتضامن يمكن أن يغيرا الحياة.

إمتثال، أم لخمسة أبناء وعضو في جمعية الحرم الزراعية، واجهت تحديات المناخ وانقطاع الكهرباء ونقص البذور، بينما استضافت 35 شخصًا نازحًا في منزلها خلال الأزمة. بدا أن الزراعة مستحيلة، لكنها رفضت الاستسلام.

من خلال التدريب على الري بالتنقيط، الأسمدة العضوية، ومدارس المزارعين الحقلية، وزيارة دراسية لتنزانيا، تعلمت تقنيات جديدة لزيادة الإنتاج وتقليل الفاقد. واليوم، إمتثال لا تزرع فقط، بل تزدهر، وتحلم أن تبدأ التصدير خلال عامين!

Imagine walking miles every day just to fetch water. Now imagine clean water flowing right in your community—powered by the sun! ☀️💧

With the generous support of WFP and in collaboration with local communities, we’ve restored and completed solar-powered water yards, bringing safe water closer to 20,000+ families. These systems don’t just reduce thirst, they sustain homes, farms, and futures, helping people rebuild their lives after crisis.

Here’s what we’ve achieved together:
✅ 16 abandoned water yards are now rehabilitated and powered with solar
✅ 10 new solar-powered water yards have finished construction
✅ 5 solar irrigation systems installed to boost agriculture
✅ Water committees trained (10 members each—3 women, 7 men) and linked to the Water Drinking Corporation for long-term sustainability.

This is more than recovery; it’s resilience in action. Communities now have the tools to keep these systems running for generations.

We’re not just giving goats - we’re creating a cycle of hope and opportunity!

As part of the UNDP-funded project “Employment and Self-employment through Strengthening Food and Livelihoods for War-Affected Populations”, 100 vulnerable households in Halfa and Wad Alhilou received goats to kickstart their livelihoods.

But here’s the best part: this isn’t the end, it’s the beginning! The production from these goats (new breed) will be shared with other families, ensuring that more households benefit, and communities grow stronger together.

نحن لا نوزع الماعز فقط، بل نخلق دورة أمل وفرص جديدة!

ضمن مشروع برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي الممول مشروع التوظيف والعمل الذاتي من خلال تعزيز الأمن الغذائي وسبل العيش للسكان المتأثرين بالحرب ، تمكّنا من تزويد 100 أسرة ضعيفة بالماعز في محليتي حلفا ووَد الحِليّو.

والأجمل من ذلك: هذه ليست النهاية، بل البداية! إنتاج هذه الماعز (سلالة جديدة) سيُعاد توزيعه على أسر أخرى، لضمان أن المزيد من العائلات ستستفيد ونمو المجتمعات معًا بشكل أقوى.
