The work undertaken by Practical Action Sudan (commencing in 1976) is to achieve the organisation’s vision of "a sustainable world free of poverty and injustice in which technology is used for the benefit of all". Practical Action Sudan (Kassala, Darfur and Blue Nile) is using technology in innovative interventions and putting the organisation’s mission into practice by translating it into a development approach to reach Sudan’s vision: sustainable community-managed development. Our Work:

Practical Action Sudan’s work is structured under three organizational themes:

• Food security, livelihoods and disaster risk reduction
• Urban sanitation

“Almunaba: From Dust to Development, A Journey of Change”

On a hopeful morning, Almunaba village in Al-Girba locality welcomed a special visit from Ms. Muna Eltahir Hamdan, Country Director of Practical Action Sudan, who came to stand with the community and celebrate the remarkable changes brought by the “Food for Assets and Small Holders Agriculture Market Support project” Funded by World Food Program and German Cooperation.

The dusty paths that once isolated the village have been transformed into a 2 km road, connecting Almunaba to the national highway and Algirba central market. Besides the homes, five water Kosik are now rising, easing the community’s struggle for clean water.

In the poultry house, the clucking of hens signals a stronger future for food security, while in the fields, modern agricultural machinery hums with promise, empowering farmers to cultivate resilience and prosperity.

In her speech, Ms. Hamdan encouraged the community to safeguard these achievements and expressed heartfelt gratitude for their cooperation in making the project a success.

The event was graced by representatives from the Humanitarian Aid Commission, the Executive Director of Al-Girba locality, the Almunaba community, the Practical Action project team, and several government institutions,all witnessing a story of transformation unfolding in Almunaba. 🌍💪

في صباحٍ مليء بالأمل، استقبلت قرية المنبأ بمحلية خشم القربة زيارة خاصة من مديرة مكتب منظمة براكتكال أكشن بالسودان، السيدة منى الطاهر حمدان، التي جاءت لتقف مع المجتمع وتشاركهم فرحة الإنجازات التي غيّرت ملامح الحياة في القرية.

لم يعد الطريق إلى السوق المركزي بالمحلية مجرد حلم؛ فقد أصبح واقعًا بطول كيلومترين يربط المنبأ بكل الاتجاهات ويمنح أهلها فرصة الوصول بسهولة إلى مدينة القربة. وعلى جنبات القرية، ارتفعت خمس أكشاك مياه لتروي عطش الناس وتخفف عنهم معاناة البحث عن الماء.

هناك، بين أصوات الدواجن في حظيرة الدواجن، يلمع الأمل في غذاءٍ أكثر وفرة وأمان. وفي الحقول، تدور الآليات الزراعية الحديثة لتفتح أبواب الإنتاج وتمنح المزارعين قوة جديدة.

في كلمتها، شجعت السيدة منى المجتمع على المحافظة على هذه الإنجازات، وأثنت على تعاونهم الذي جعل الحلم حقيقة. وقد حضر الفعالية ممثلون من مفوضية العون الإنساني، والمدير التنفيذي لمحلية خشم القربة، إلى جانب مجتمع القرية وفريق المشروع وعدد من الجهات التنفيذية، ليشهدوا جميعًا قصة نجاح تُكتب اليوم في المنبأ. 🌾✨

In Abu Al Naga village, Gedarif State, the community experienced a remarkable day of pride and hope.

The village welcomed a joint mission led by Ms. Mona El Tahir Hamdan, Country Director of Practical Action Sudan, and the Country Director of the World Food Programme, who came together to inaugurate projects executed by Practical Action and funded by the World Food Programme under the “Food for Assets and Small Holders Agriculture Market Support project.”

It was a vibrant scene: the smell of fresh bread from the traditional bakery, the flow of clean water from the water yard, the laughter and unity inside the community center, and the farmers’ dreams growing stronger with the seed bank.

The event brought together the Humanitarian Aid Commission Commissioner in Gedarif State, the Minister of Agriculture, project teams from Practical Action and the World Food Programme, and most importantly, the local community.

In her remarks, Ms. Mona El Tahir Hamdan encouraged everyone to keep working together and safeguard these projects, so they remain a beacon of resilience and sustainable development.

استقبلت القرية زيارة مشتركة من المدير القُطري لمنظمة براكتكال أكشن بالسودان الأستاذة منى الطاهر حمدان والمدير القُطري لبرنامج الأغذية العالمي، حيث جاءا معًا لافتتاح المشاريع التي نُفذت بواسطة براكتكال أكشن وبتمويل من برنامج الأغذية العالمي ضمن مشروع الأصول مقابل الغذاء ودعم سوق أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة.

كان المشهد حيًا ومؤثرا"؛ رائحة الخبز الطازج من المخبز التقليدي، تدفق المياه من المورد المائي الذي أصبح مصدر حياة يومية، أصوات الناس في المركز المجتمعي، وأحلام المزارعين التي بدأت تكبر مع بنك البذور.

شارك في الزيارة السيد مفوض العون الإنساني بولاية القضارف، والسيد وزير وزارة الإنتاج والموارد الإقتصادية، وفريق العمل من براكتكال أكشن وبرنامج الأغذية العالمي، إلى جانب المجتمع المستفيد الذي كان قلب الحدث.

وخلال كلمتها، شجعت الأستاذة منى الطاهر حمدان المجتمع على مواصلة العمل الجماعي والمحافظة على هذه المشاريع لتظل منارة للتنمية والاستدامة. 🌾✨

✨ In Abu Al Naja, it feels as if tomorrow is already knocking at the doors ✨

The well and water station are now ready to become the source of life that will ease the struggle of accessing clean water. Beside them, the Community Center stands waiting to open its doors, bringing people together for learning, work, and celebrations. The Traditional Bakery is complete, and the smell of fresh bread seems almost within reach, while the Warehouse is prepared to protect farmers’ harvests, ensuring food security and stronger local markets.

These buildings are quiet for now, but they carry deep meaning. They signal that change is coming — that dignity and opportunity are close. Families imagine drawing water with ease, youth pictures gathering to sharpen their skills, and farmers see their crops secured for the future.

Beyond the constructions, cash support has already helped households meet their needs with pride, while training programs for women and youth sharpened skills, built confidence, and opened doors to opportunity. Communities also joined Gender and Protection sessions, learning how to safeguard rights, strengthen resilience, and build safer spaces for all.

Funded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and German Cooperation, and accomplished by Practical Action (PA), this project in Abu Al Naja tells a living story, where water, bread, knowledge, and resilience are woven together. It is the story of a village standing at the edge of transformation, ready to welcome a brighter future.

🔑 Because these achievements reflect basic rights for every human being, the project shows clearly that:
• Clean water is the foundation of life and health.
• Spaces for learning and work are where knowledge grows and opportunities open.
• Clean food nourishes families and gives them strength.
• Safe seeds protect harvests and ensure food security.

أصبح البئر ومحطة المياه جاهزين ليكونا مصدر الحياة الذي سيخفف عن الأهالي مشقة الحصول على الماء
النظيف. بجانبهما يقف المركز المجتمعي، في انتظار أن يفتح أبوابه ليجمع الناس في مكان واحد للتعلم والعمل والاحتفال بالإنجازات. أما المخبز التقليدي فقد اكتمل، ورائحة الخبز الطازج تكاد تُشم في الأفق، بينما يقف المخزن الجديد ليحفظ محاصيل المزارعين ويوفر الأمن الغذائي ويقوي الأسواق المحلية.

هذه المباني ما زالت صامتة، لكنها تحمل معاني كبيرة. فهي إشارات على أن التغيير قادم، وأن الكرامة والفرص باتت قريبة. الأسر تتخيل سهولة الحصول على الماء، الشباب يتصورون تجمعات للتدريب وصقل المهارات، والمزارعون يرون محاصيلهم محفوظة للمستقبل.
إلى جانب هذه الإنشاءات، ساعد الدعم النقدي الأسر على تلبية احتياجاتها بكرامة، بينما أسهمت برامج تدريب النساء والشباب في صقل المهارات وبناء الثقة وفتح أبواب جديدة. كما شاركت المجتمعات في جلسات النوع الاجتماعي والحماية، لتتعلم كيف تحمي الحقوق وتعزز الصمود وتبني مساحات أكثر أماناً للجميع.

بتمويل من برنامج الأغذية العالمي WFP والتعاون الألماني، وتنفيذ منظمة براكتكال أكشن، أصبح هذا المشروع في أبو النجاء قصة حية , حيث يتداخل الماء والخبز والمعرفة والصمود معاً. إنها قصة قرية تقف على أعتاب التحول، مستعدة لاستقبال مستقبل أكثر إشراقاً.

ولأن لكل إنسان الحق في العيش بكرامة، فإن هذا المشروع يجسد تلك الحقوق بوضوح:
• الماء النظيف... أساس الحياة والصحة.
• مساحات للتعلم والعمل ...حيث تنمو المعرفة وتكبر الفرص.
• الغذاء النظيف ... غذاء يغذي الأسر ويمنحها القوة.
• البذور الآمنة ... لحماية المحاصيل وضمان الأمن الغذائي

✨ The story begins in Almunaba… a new road, flowing water, and projects that change lives✨

Since the arrival of the project “Food for Assets and Small Holders Agriculture Market Support”, funded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and implemented by Practical Action, signs of transformation have begun to shine across the community.

A newly built 2 km road now connects the village to the national road and Girba central market, opening doors to services, opportunities, and markets that were once far away.

In another corner, the sounds of poultry echo from the new project that strengthens food security and provides families with sustainable income. Across the village, five water kiosks stand tall, bringing clean water closer to every household.

Support also reached small farmers, who now work with modern agricultural machinery to boost productivity and improve their livelihoods. The community gathered in training sessions, learning about protection, GBV, and agriculture, while a mobile radio station carried messages of awareness and knowledge to every home.

✨ في المُنبَّأ بدأت الحكاية… طريق جديد، مياه تروي، ومشاريع تغيّر حياة الناس✨
منذ وصول مشروع المساعدات الغذائية مقابل الأصول ودعم سوق أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة، الممول من برنامج الأغذية العالمي WFP والمنفذ بواسطة منظمة براكتكال أكشن، بدأت ملامح التغيير تظهر في كل زاوية من القرية.
الطريق الجديد الممتد لمسافة 2 كيلومتر فتح أبواب القرية على العالم، رابطاً الأهالي بالطريق القومي والسوق المركزي بمدينة القربة. ومعه، أصبح الوصول إلى الخدمات والفرص أسهل من أي وقت مضى. في مكان آخر، سترتفع أصوات الدواجن في المشروع الجديد الذي يعزز الأمن الغذائي ويمنح الأسر مصدر دخل مستدام. وعلى طول القرية، انتشرت خمسة كُشك مياه لتروي عطش الناس وتخفف عنهم عناء البحث عن الماء.
ولم يتوقف الدعم عند البنية التحتية، بل وصل إلى صغار المزارعين الذين تسلموا آليات زراعية حديثة تساعدهم على زيادة الإنتاج وتحسين معيشتهم. كما جلس المجتمع في حلقات تدريبية يتعلمون عن الحماية، العنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي، وأفضل الممارسات الزراعية، بينما تنقل إذاعة متحركة رسائل الوعي والمعرفة إلى كل بيت.

🌟 From Gedarif, a Day of Hope and Progress! 🌟

On 3rd of May, in the heart of Gedarif State, Gedarif Locality, East Galabat, and Gala Elnahal, communities gathered at the Practical Action Office to celebrate a new chapter for livelihoods and resilience.

🚜✨ What made it special?
It was the handover of agricultural machinery, meat production tools, vocational equipment, and resources for Saving and Loan Associations , practical support that speaks directly to the needs of families and youth in our communities.

👥 Who stood with us?
The presence of the Ministry of Production and Economic Resources, the Humanitarian Aid Commission, the Vocational Center, the Livestock Administration, and the Organization Coordination Administration gave weight to the occasion.
Their support showed that when institutions and communities unite, real change happens.

💬 It wasn’t just about machines and tools; it was about possibilities. About mothers who can now save and invest, youth who can learn a trade, and farmers who can produce more with dignity. The atmosphere was filled with pride, gratitude, and hope for a stronger Gedarif.

🌍 Together, we are building futures where resilience is not just a word, but a lived reality.

في 3 مايو، اجتمعت المجتمعات المحلية من محلية القضارف، القلابات الشرقية، وقلع النحل في مكتب منظمة براكتكال أكشن بولاية القضارف للاحتفال بمرحلة جديدة نحو تعزيز سبل العيش والمرونة.

🚜✨ ما الذي جعل الحدث مميزاً؟

تم تسليم الآليات الزراعية، أدوات إنتاج اللحوم، المعدات المهنية، ومعدات جمعيات الادخار والقروض — دعم عملي يلامس احتياجات الأسر والشباب بشكل مباشر.

🌟 A Different Way to Talk About Animal Health 🌟

In Kassala, Algirba, and New Halfa, communities gathered not for a lecture, but for a story. Through drama sketches, everyday challenges of animal health came alive on stage, turning awareness into action, and information into inspiration.

This innovative campaign was carried out by Friends of Peace and Development (local Partner) in collaboration with the Veterinary Extension Department, under the project “Enhancing Food Security and Resilience of Rural Communities in Sudan”, funded by European Union through UNOPs (United Nations Office for Projects Services).

The response was overwhelming. Communities didn’t just watch it, they interacted, laughed, reflected, and learned. The message reached hearts and minds in a way far beyond traditional methods. 🐪🐄

The success of this campaign proves that when creativity meets collaboration, awareness becomes unforgettable. ✨

في إطار مشروع “تعزيز الأمن الغذائي والقدرة على الصمود في المجتمعات الريفية في السودان” الممول من الاتحاد الأوروبي ومكتب الأمم المتحدة لخدمات المشاريع (UNOPS)وبتنفيذ من منظمة براكتكال آكشن ، نفّذت منظمة أصدقاء السلام والتنمية الشريك الوطني بالتعاون مع إدارة الإرشاد البيطري حملة توعية حول صحة الحيوان بأسلوب غير تقليدي.

هذه المرة لم تكن الرسائل عبر محاضرات أو نشرات، بل عبر مسرحيات قصيرة جسّدت واقع المجتمعات الريفية وتحدياتها اليومية مع الحيوان. الجمهور لم يكن متلقياً فقط، بل كان جزءاً من العرض؛ يتفاعل، يناقش، ويشارك في صياغة الرسالة. 🎭

هذا التفاعل الكبير جعل الحملة أكثر تأثيراً، حيث وصلت الرسائل بوضوح وبأسلوب ممتع ومقنع، بعيداً عن الطرق التقليدية المعتادة.

نجاح الحملة يوضح أن الجمع بين الإبداع والتفاعل المجتمعي يصنع أثراً يتجاوز اللحظة، ويترك بصمة طويلة الأمد في مسيرة التنمية الريفية.

In Kassala, Algirba, and New Halfa, women from rural communities came together to participate in hands-on training workshops in handicrafts, food processing, and dairy production. These workshops were more than just training, they became spaces of creativity, knowledge-sharing, and confidence-building. ✨

With our local partner, Friends of Peace and Development Organization, and under the project “Enhancing Food Security and Resilience of Rural Communities in Sudan”, we are empowering women with practical skills that open doors to new livelihoods, strengthen household income, and build resilient communities. 💪

Every step in these workshops is an investment in a brighter future, where women transform their skills into small businesses, local products, and innovative solutions for food security. 🌍

في كسلا، القربة وحلفا الجديدة، اجتمعت نساء من مختلف المجتمعات الريفية للمشاركة في ورش تدريبية عملية في مجالات الأشغال اليدوية، تصنيع الأغذية، وصناعة منتجات الألبان. هذه الورش لم تكن مجرد تدريب، بل كانت مساحة للإبداع، تبادل الخبرات، وبناء الثقة بالنفس.
بشراكة مع منظمة أصدقاء السلام والتنمية كشريك محلي، وتحت مظلة مشروع "تعزيز الأمن الغذائي والقدرة على الصمود في المجتمعات الريفية في السودان"، نعمل معاً على تمكين النساء بالمهارات التي تفتح أمامهن فرصاً جديدة ، وتساهم في تحسين دخل الأسر وتعزيز صمود المجتمع. 💪
كل خطوة في هذه الورش هي استثمار في مستقبل أكثر إشراقاً، حيث تصبح النساء قادرات على تحويل مهاراتهن إلى مشاريع صغيرة، منتجات محلية، وحلول مبتكرة للأمن الغذائي. 🌍

✨ Theatre as a tool for change… Abu Al-Naga takes the stage✨

In Abu Al-Naga village, Gedarif State, the community didn’t just watch a play, they became part of it. Through interactive theatre, voices rose, stories unfolded, and powerful conversations sparked around gender, protection, and resilience.

This wasn’t entertainment alone. It was a living dialogue, where the local community, the Humanitarian Aid Commission, and the Practical Action team joined hands to act out real challenges and imagine solutions together.

The event is part of the project: Food for Assets and Small Holders Agriculture Market Support, implemented by Practical Action with funding from the World Food Program (WFP).

By blending creativity with community engagement, the project is helping smallholder farmers strengthen their livelihoods and build a more sustainable future.

🎭 Theatre became a mirror, a voice, and a spark, reminding us that change begins when communities take the stage.

في قرية أبو النجا بولاية القضارف، لم يكن المسرح مجرد عرض، بل كان مساحة يشارك فيها الجميع. عبر المسرح
