UNFPA Deputy Executive Director Andrew Saberton inaugurated the Al Manara Women and Girls Safe Space in Khartoum, a dedicated centre designed to support women and girls, including internally displaced individuals and members of the returnee communities after years of displacement.
During discussions at the centre, women and girls shared the challenges they face in Khartoum, highlighting the urgent need for stronger health and protection services and reliable access to essentials such as food, clean water, and dignity kits. Despite these hardships, their resilience and determination stood out.

Women and girls safe spaces like Al Manara create opportunities for empowerment, healing, and hope. Through vocational training, women and girls can develop skills that help them rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence. UNFPA’s WGSS initiatives provide safe environments, psychosocial support, life-skills training, and comprehensive GBV care. Located near integrated reproductive health and protection services, these centres connect women and girls with a broad range of GBV and SRH support through group sessions, peer networks, and community outreach programs.

During his visit to Ibrahim Malek Teaching Hospital in Khartoum, the UNFPA Deputy Executive Director, Andrew Saberton, highlighted the importance of restoring essential health services as women and girls begin returning to the city after years of displacement caused by the conflict.
The rehabilitation of the hospital marks an important step toward restoring maternal and reproductive healthcare and supporting communities seeking safety, stability, and a return to normal life.
Across , millions remain displaced and continue to face extremely difficult conditions.
As families gradually return to , access to health facilities, clean water, and protection services remains critical, particularly for women and girls. UNFPA continues to work with partners to restore vital services and support the resilience and recovery of communities affected by the crisis.

In , ongoing conflict continues to devastate communities, leaving women and girls to face pregnancy and childbirth without access to safe medical care.
In war-affected areas, hospitals have been damaged or forced to shut down, medicines are in short supply, and many families are unable to reach health facilities due to violence and insecurity.
Yet amid these challenges, midwives remain. They continue serving their communities despite having little to no resources. They stand beside mothers during labor, provide prenatal care, support safe deliveries, respond to emergencies, and offer comfort when fear feels overwhelming. For many mothers and newborns, midwives are the only lifeline.
To the midwives of Sudan: thank you for your courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to women and girls during these difficult circumstances. Thank you for showing up when systems fail. Thank you for protecting life in the midst of war.

Mobile health clinics and reproductive health services are now reaching women in Goz el Salam camp, White Nile, , but healthcare alone isn’t enough.

Particularly breastfeeding mothers and their newborns need food, clean water, and continuous support to keep themselves and their babies alive.

Too often, women in displacement camps are giving birth without food, clean water, or basic support. Some of the breastfeeding mothers we met reported they go days without eating while trying to breastfeed their newborns.

Humanitarian aid must be connected and pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are to be in the top priority of those in greatest need.
Survival shouldn’t depend on luck.

At the Tunaydbah Refugee Camp in Gedaref State , the Tunaybah Field Hospital serves as a vital lifeline for women and girls among both refugee and host communities in the surrounding areas.
Established as an emergency health response facility, the hospital is supported by UNFPA and operates with generous funding from . It functions as a key secondary-level referral center, providing essential, life-saving care every day. The hospital offers 24/7 emergency services alongside comprehensive maternal and reproductive healthcare. These include antenatal care, safe deliveries (both normal and cesarean sections), and family planning. It also delivers critical gender-based violence and protection services, psychosocial support, and referrals to specialised care. In a context where conflict and seasonal flooding frequently restrict access to healthcare, the field hospital ensures that essential services remain available, saving lives and providing hope when it is needed most.

Today we visited Al-Jabalain Hospital in White Nile State, . What we saw was devastating.
This was once a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of people. With its closure, women have lost access to safe services.
Health facilities are protected under international humanitarian law. They must never be a target.
Women and girls across Sudan deserve safe, accessible reproductive healthcare.

Women and girls have suffered horrific violence since the conflict in began three years ago, including sexual violence, abductions and forced marriage.
Many men and boys have been killed or forcibly disappeared, leaving millions of women as the head of their household, struggling to survive and make ends meet.
About 9 million people are displaced in Sudan, and with the health system shattered and funding running low, life-saving care is out of reach for many.
Hear from women and girls about the violence and suffering they’ve experienced and witnessed and share to help .
The people of Sudan need unimpeded humanitarian aid, respect for international humanitarian law, and, more than anything, peace.
