Using Interactive Drama to Promote Positive Health Behaviors in Hameshkoreib Locality
Hameshkoreib Locality is characterized by diverse ethnic groups, strong cultural traditions, and low health literacy levels, which often influence health-seeking behaviors and limit the effectiveness of conventional health communication approaches. These challenges were particularly evident among women and caregivers, who faced barriers to accessing and understanding essential health and nutrition information.
To address these challenges, ADD, in partnership with UNICEF, implemented the SHARE Project, an innovative Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) intervention using interactive community drama. Local actors and volunteers performed culturally relevant dramas developed in consultation with community members, ensuring that the messages reflected local realities, language, and traditions.
The performances addressed key topics such as maternal health, routine immunization, child nutrition, hygiene practices, and the timely use of health services. Each session was followed by facilitated discussions, providing opportunities for community members to ask questions, share experiences, and address misconceptions.
The drama sessions attracted large and diverse audiences, including women, men, youth, and community leaders. By presenting health messages through storytelling and relatable scenarios, the intervention transformed complex health information into engaging and accessible learning experiences.
Community monitoring and participant feedback indicated increased awareness of essential health and nutrition practices, improved engagement with health promotion activities, and greater acceptance of recommended health behaviors. The intervention also created a safe and inclusive space for discussing sensitive health issues, strengthening community dialogue and participation.
Community Voice
"Previously, we only heard health messages during meetings, but seeing them acted out in stories that reflected our daily lives made them easier to understand and discuss with our families."
— Community Leader, Hameshkoreib Locality
Interactive drama proved to be an effective SBC approach for culturally diverse communities where traditional norms strongly influence behavior. By combining education with entertainment, the intervention helped overcome communication barriers, encourage community participation, and promote positive health practices in a culturally acceptable manner.
The use of interactive drama significantly enhanced health awareness and community engagement in Hameshkoreib Locality. Through culturally adapted storytelling and participatory dialogue, the SHARE Project successfully strengthened understanding and adoption of essential health and nutrition practices, contributing to improved health outcomes among vulnerable populations.
