Year after year, the dedication of HIV AIDS Support Organisation HASO members ensures that this meaningful candlelight memorial continues to find a place within one of our parishes — keeping alive not only the memory of those lost to AIDS, but also a spirit of prayer, awareness, solidarity and hope within the Church and the wider community.

Zero Discrimination Day 1st March 2026

HASO joins UNAIDS call to end discrimination and criminalisation

In observance of Zero Discrimination Day on March 1, 2026, the HIV and AIDS Support Organisation (HASO) joins the global call led by UNAids under the theme ‘Save Lives: Decriminalise’.

“Zero Discrimination Day affirms the right of every person to live a full, productive and dignified life. It also serves as a critical reminder of the need to eliminate stigma, discrimination and punitive laws that continue to place people at heightened risk and limit access to essential HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.

“In line with its mission to promote the health, rights and well-being of people affected by and living with HIV in Seychelles, Haso remains steadfast in advocating for an enabling, inclusive and rights-based environment where no one is left behind. The organisation continues to work collaboratively with partners and communities to reduce stigma, expand awareness and strengthen support systems.

“UNAIDS envisions a world with zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero Aids-related deaths. Achieving this vision requires addressing inequalities that undermine justice and human dignity. Discrimination – whether based on gender, income, race, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religion – continues to create barriers to lifesaving services and social inclusion.

“The 2026 theme highlights the urgent need to end stigma, discrimination and criminalisation that drive vulnerability and discourage individuals from seeking care. On this important day, Haso calls for:

Policy makers to advance evidence-based, rights-affirming laws and policies that protect public health and human dignity;
Institutions and leaders to actively champion anti-discrimination practices and create safe, supportive environments;
Communities and individuals to foster compassion, understanding and solidarity with people living with and affected by HIV.
“Ending discrimination is both a human rights obligation and a public health priority. Through sustained partnership, community engagement and advocacy, Haso remains committed to champion a Seychelles where everyone can access services without fear, live with dignity and realise their full potential.”
