World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI) officially launched the WOVEN Programme, comprising the Youth Social and Entrepreneurship Development Plus Child Protection (YSED+CP) and the Solomon Islands Ending Violence Against Pikinini (SIEVAP) Phase II Projects, in Auki, Malaita Province, yesterday - Monday, June 1.
Funded by the New Zealand Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the programme is a continuation of Phase I of the same initiatives implemented in Malaita Province.
It will be delivered over the next five years across communities in East, North, and Central Malaita, aiming to strengthen youth leadership, entrepreneurship, economic resilience, family wellbeing, and child protection systems to ensure children and young people thrive in safe and supportive environments.
The launch brought together representatives from the Malaita Provincial Government, New Zealand High Commission- Honiara, Solomon Islands, government ministries, implementing partners, faith leaders, youth representatives, civil society organizations, and community leaders, reflecting a shared commitment to improving the lives of children and young people in Malaita Province.
Speaking at the launch, WVSI Operations Manager Irene Marbun said the WOVEN Programme represents an integrated approach that combines sustainable livelihoods, youth engagement, and child protection to create lasting change for communities.
โ€œThis project reflects our commitment to youth and children by bringing together sustainable livelihoods, youth engagement, and child protection. As we move forward into a new phase, we are building on strong foundations and investing in the next generation of leaders who will drive positive change in their communities,โ€ Ms. Marbun said.
Ms. Marbun highlighted that the new programme builds on the successes achieved under Phase I, where young people participating in the IMPACT+ Club model completed 26 Community Service-Learning Projects across 20 communities in East and North Malaita.
These youth-led initiatives included the construction of five civic centres, a recreational house, seven Jacobโ€™s ladders, public sanitation facilities, household sanitation systems, community notice boards, and improvements to a community water system. Together, these projects improved access to community services, strengthened local infrastructure, and benefited thousands of community members.
She also noted significant progress in child protection outcomes during Phase I, including increased awareness of reporting services for violence against children, stronger engagement of parents and caregivers, and the establishment of community-based referral networks and localized case management systems that contribute to safer environments for children.
Representing the New Zealand High Commission - Solomon Islands and the New Zealand Government, Acting Development Counsellor Luke Kiddle reaffirmed New Zealandโ€™s commitment to supporting Solomon Islands communities through long-term partnerships that invest in children and youth.
โ€œNew Zealand believes that children and young people are the future of our countries. We are proud to support this programme in partnership with World Vision Solomon Islands to strengthen youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, leadership, and safe environments where children can grow free from violence,โ€ Mr. Kiddle said.
He also highlighted the importance of locally led development, a key approach in New Zealandโ€™s partnership with Solomon Islands. He said that locally led development recognizes the vital role of communities in identifying their own needs, priorities, and goals. It empowers communities to assess and understand their development challenges and determine how support can best be provided, ensuring that development initiatives are guided by local voices, knowledge, and decision-making.
Mr. Kiddle also acknowledged the contributions of implementing partners, including Malaita Christian Care Centre (MCCC), Kastom Gaden Association (KGA), Youth Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI), and Dreamcast Theatre Solomon Islands, whose expertise will support programme implementation across Malaita Province.
Malaita Provincial Premier Hon. Elijah Asilaua welcomed the launch and expressed appreciation to the New Zealand Government and World Vision Solomon Islands for their continued investment in the development of Malaita communities.
โ€œYour work in communities, particularly in the areas of youth development, livelihoods, education, health, and child protection, continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people. We look forward to seeing the positive outcomes that this programme will deliver for our communities,โ€ Premier Asilaua said.
The WOVEN Programme represents a collaborative effort between government, development partners, community organizations, faith leaders, and local communities to address the challenges facing children and young people while creating pathways for economic opportunity, leadership development, and community resilience.
The launch demonstrated a shared commitment among government agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, faith leaders, and communities to work together towards creating safer, stronger, and more prosperous futures for children and young people across Malaita Province.

World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI), through its Faith and Development (F&D) Project, has successfully hosted a regional Training of Facilitators (ToF) workshop on the Celebrating Families model from May 19โ€“22, bringing together participants from across the Pacific region.
The workshop convened staff from World Vision Vanuatu, World Vision Papua New Guinea, local Area Programs, faith leaders, and key partners. Facilitators included representatives from World Vision United States (WVUS), the South Asia Pacific Regional Office, World Vision PNG, World Vision Vanuatu, and WVSI.
Celebrating Families is one of World Visionโ€™s most widely used project models, described as โ€œa journey together.โ€ It equips parents and caregivers with experiential behavior-change approaches that strengthen family bonds and nurture the spiritual and emotional well-being of children. The program also empowers faith leaders and community influencers to challenge harmful social norms and create supportive environments for childrenโ€™s holistic development.
By empowering families and challenging harmful norms, the Celebrating Families model ensures that children grow up in environments where they are cherished, protected, and free to flourish in Godโ€™s love.
Together, we are sowing seeds of transformationโ€”strengthening families today to build communities of hope tomorrow.

This week, WVSI, together with its faith partners, celebrated a significant milestone through the official signing of a Declaration under the Faith and Development Project (F&D) to support the Child Friendly Church Initiative.
The Declaration was signed by WVSI National Director Ms. Asuntha Charles alongside representatives โ€“ Pastor Ellison Bako and Elder Barnabas Maelimani from Kingdom Harvest Ministries and Jericho SSEC.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to making churches safe, inclusive, and nurturing spaces where children can grow spiritually, socially, and emotionally.
A Child Friendly Church is a holistic system that:
โ€ข Protects children from all forms of violence, exploitation, vulnerability, and discrimination within church and family settings;
โ€ข Provides safe and engaging spaces for learning, creativity, and recreation;
โ€ข Strengthens the role of parents, caregivers, and church leaders in supporting child wellbeing, and
โ€ข Promotes a community-based approach to child protection and development
Rooted in the biblical teaching, โ€œLet the children come to me, do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these,โ€ the initiative places children at the centre of church life and ministry.
Participating churches will therefore:
โ€ข Form Child Friendly Church teams,
โ€ข Conduct start-up workshops,
โ€ข Map current child protection conditions,
โ€ข Develop or revise child-friendly policies and programs,
โ€ข Improve child-friendly infrastructure planning,
โ€ข Provide venues for coordination and meetings,
โ€ข Engage in regular joint monitoring and learning; and
โ€ข Participate in capacity building on child protection.
The event also featured a powerful message from 10-year-old Angelia Panasasa, who spoke on behalf of children in the communities:
โ€œTo see you all here today brings hope and assurance to us because this is about the wellbeing, safety, and future of children.โ€
โ€œAs children, our biggest need is to have parents who are present at home, to encourage us, guide us, and be our safe place when we face our fears. A home is where we build the strong foundation for our lives and our future.โ€
She concluded with a powerful reminder:
โ€œStrong families lead to stronger communities and make a nation stronger.โ€
WVSI National Director, Ms. Asuntha Charles said that at the heart of this milestone is a powerful truth: when we invest in children, we secure the future of our families, communities, and nation. She said the Child Friendly Church Initiative is more than a programโ€”it is a movement that calls everyone to action, challenging churches, families, and leaders to stand together as protectors, nurturers, and champions of every childโ€™s rights and dignity.
She added that WVSI, alongside its faith partners, is demonstrating that true transformation begins where children feel safestโ€”at home, in church, and within their communities. By creating child-friendly spaces grounded in love, protection, and inclusion, she said they are raising a generation that is confident, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
โ€œLet this Declaration be a living commitmentโ€”not just words on paper, but a shared responsibility carried forward with faith, compassion, and courage. Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and protected. Every church has a role to play. Every community has the power to transform,โ€ Ms. Charles said.
โ€œTogether, let us continue to stand strong, speak boldly, and act decisivelyโ€”for every child, everywhere, every day.โ€

Resilient Futures: Communityโ€‘Driven Climate Action in North Malaita and Makira

Across North Malaita and Makira, a powerful story of hope and transformation is unfolding โ€” one driven by communities themselves. Through the CARA Project, the people of Matakwalao (Sulagwalu) and Kwene in Malaita and Manitawanihuki and Tawarodo in Makira/Ulawa are rising with purpose, turning challenges into opportunities and building a future that is stronger, greener, and more resilient.

From beekeeping to tilapia farming, families are creating sustainable livelihoods while strengthening food security. At the same time, Savings for Transformation (S4T) groups are helping households build financial resilience and plan ahead.

Highlights:
- 40 beekeeping boxes established
- 6 Fish ponds ready for production
- Improved financial literacy and enterprise skills for 160 participants
- Strong inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities
- Active partnerships with local stakeholders

Together, these efforts are more than progress โ€” they are proof that when communities are empowered, they can lead their own change.

We extend our sincere gratitude to FCDO for their generous support and commitment to this project. Your partnership is helping turn vision into reality and empowering communities to thrive in the face of climate change.

To the people of Matakwalao and Kwene, Manitawanihuki and Tawarodo and all partners involved โ€” thank you. Your dedication, leadership, and unity are building not just stronger communities, but a stronger future for North Malaita.

This is climate action in motion. This is resilience in action. This is hope made real.
