Ensuring the right quantity, quality, and accurate information on each package, Red Cross volunteers diligently repacked prepositioned hygiene kits. Each box was carefully replenished with up-to-date non-food items (NFIs), guaranteeing that families receive the essentials they need. These repacked kits are now on the standby and will be distributed depending on community request from ongoing community engagementโ€”providing families dignity and hygiene as part of the ongoing TC Maila Early Recovery Operations.

Volunteers Engaged in TC Maila Operations Receive Basic Psychological First Aid Training

Volunteers recently completed a three-day training on Basic Psychological First Aid (PFA) to strengthen their community engagement during the ongoing TC Maila Response โ€“ Early Recovery Operations.
Families continue to cope emotionally and mentally with the aftermath of TC Maila. Through this training, volunteers are now better prepared to provide humane, supportive, and practical assistanceโ€”helping community members feel safe, ensuring their basic needs are met, and connecting them to essential services for ongoing support.
This important initiative was made possible with the support of PIRPOP- French Red Cross, who engaged a PFA Trainer from the sister National Society, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society and in the printing of the Basic PFA pocket size Booklet. This collaboration ensured volunteers gained the knowledge and confidence needed to deliver basic yet meaningful psychological support in times of crisis.

On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we honour the Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff who show up every day for people in crisis. They are not separate from the communities they serve, they are part of them. Because beyond every emergency, every response, and every emblem, there is one truth: we are United in Humanity.

Volunteers were at the forefront of the TC Maila Response in Western Province for almost 3 weeks into the Response without the presence of Red Cross Staff on the Ground. Volunteers acted swiftly, mobilising over 30 volunteers both professional and community based, assisting the Provincial Government at the Emergency Operation Centre, warehousing and distribution of relief items into the affected communities and providing surveillance in the communities. This response is more than a logistical success; it is a masterclass in local leadership and a true testament to the power of volunteerism.
