Day 2 Workshop Summary

Day 2 focused on strengthening participants' understanding of governance, public policy, youth and child rights, national development priorities, and essential public services in the Solomon Islands.

Key topics covered included:

1. Parliamentary Committees

Understanding the role and functions of parliamentary committees in overseeing government activities, reviewing legislation, and promoting accountability and transparency.

2. Agenda 2030 (SDGs), CRC, and National Development Strategy

Introduction to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and how these align with the Solomon Islands National Development Strategy to promote sustainable and inclusive development.

3. Solomon Islands National Youth Policy 2017-2030

Overview of the policy's vision, goals, and strategies for empowering young people and increasing youth participation in national development.

4. Solomon Islands National Children Policy 2023-2028

Examination of government commitments to improve the well-being, protection, education, health, and participation of children throughout the country.

5. Children's Rights, Child Protection Laws, Policies, and Safeguarding Measures

Raising awareness about child rights, legal protections available to children, reporting mechanisms, and safeguarding practices to ensure children are protected from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The evolution of the Westminster parliamentary system in the Solomon Islands since Independence in 1978.

The roles and responsibilities of Members of Parliament in representing citizens, making laws, and overseeing government.
