Today, in partnership with Kicukiro District, we held a Day of General Discussion on key issues affecting the District as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, with the Theme: “Let’s build the District we want.”

A documentary film was played featuring adolescent mothers who amplified their call to leaders, from District to village level, to protect them from stigma and abuse, support civil registration for their children, help them heal, return to school, and engage families in meaningful dialogue on parenting and SRHR.

The General Discussion Day brought together 326 Chiefs of Villages, 41 Executive Secretaries of Cells, 10 Executive Secretaries of Sectors, officials from Kicukiro District, security organs (Army, Police, RIB), 71 members of Council Organs from Cell to Sector level, and the Lord Mayor of the City of Kigali.

In his remarks, the District Executive Administration emphasized the responsibility of local leadership to protect and reinforce gatekeeping mechanisms from District to village level, backing the message of Hope and Homes for Children. Hope and Homes for Children shared key messages on the duty to protect every child, including children with disabilities, with a special focus on adolescent mothers, and to strengthen family- and community-based care.

Protecting children, supporting adolescent mothers, and strengthening families is essential to building stronger, safer communities for all.

Hope and Homes for Children, in collaboration with Ubumwe Community Center; has officially inaugurated an Inclusive Community Hub in Musanze District. The facility is designed to provide essential services to children and young persons.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Executive Secretary of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Emmanuel Ndayisaba, commended Hope and Homes for Children for its longstanding partnership in advancing the rights and wellbeing of children with disabilities. He also encouraged other organizations working in the disability sector to learn from Hope and Homes for Children’s effective use of resources and its demonstrated impact in transforming lives.

In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of Hope and Homes for Children, Mark Waddington, expressed appreciation to all partners who contributed to the successful construction of the Community Hub. He emphasized that the success in Rwanda serves as a model, inspiring other nations to adopt similar approaches. He highlighted that lessons from Rwanda continue to shape global efforts and inform international frameworks. He noted that globally, more than five million children remain in institutional care, many of whom have disabilities. The progress achieved in Rwanda demonstrates what is possible.

The Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs of Musanze District, Theobald Kayiranga, extended gratitude to Hope and Homes for Children for establishing the new Community Hub and for its continued support in reintegrating children and young persons with disabilities from institutional care into family and community settings. He described the Hub as a model of excellence in inclusive service provision and encouraged other partners in the district to replicate this approach across other sectors.

Currently, the Community Hub serves 83 children and young persons, including those with disabilities. At full capacity, it will accommodate up to 150 children and young persons, providing access to inclusive early childhood development, occupational and physiotherapy services, and transitional education support within a family-centered environment.

We are deeply honored to have been awarded by Musanze District, Northern Province, Republic of Rwanda, for our contribution to the socio-economic development of the District during 2024/2025.

This recognition reflects the collective effort and impact achieved together with local leaders and communities in improving the lives of children especially those with disabilities and their families. Our work includes creating inclusive services by constructing a community hub, improving livelihoods, supporting adolescent mothers, closing institutions for children with disabilities, reunifying children with their families, and helping children at risk of separation to remain safely with their families.

We thank Musanze District for this meaningful award. We deeply value the District’s outstanding leadership and our strong, collaborative partnership, which has contributed to the success of Hope and Homes for Children in Musanze District.

Together with the Director General of the National Child Development Agency (NCDA), Mrs. Ingabire Assumpta, the Executive Secretary of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Mr. Ndayisaba Emmanuel, the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs in Musanze District, Mr. Theobald KAYIRANGA and the Country Director of Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda, Vidivi Immaculee Karangwa a joint field visit was conducted to review activities implemented by Hope and Homes for Children in Musanze District. These activities are part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Hope and Homes for Children, NCDA, and NCPD.

The visit began with families of children and young persons with disabilities who were reintegrated from a center for children with disabilities in Musanze District. The delegation witnessed how these children and young persons are thriving within their families demonstrating the impact of reintegration and family care. Then, they met with peer support groups of parents of children with disabilities, where parents shared how these safe spaces have helped them heal emotional wounds and strengthen positive parenting practices. The final stop was a tour of the Community Hub currently under construction, which aims to support children and young persons with disabilities from surrounding communities by providing access to essential services.

The joint field visit reinforced the partnership between NCDA, NCPD, Hope and Homes for Children, and Musanze District, with a renewed commitment to supporting children and young persons with disabilities. It also highlighted the importance of inclusive childcare reform and the reintegration of children and young persons with disabilities from institutions into families.

We were honoured to share Rwanda’s experience with special foster care for children with disabilities during the Specialized Foster Care Webinar hosted by IFCO ( Foster Care Organisation) and Transform Alliance Africa (TAA).

We highlighted how collaboration with government, communities, and caregivers makes it possible to place children, including those with disabilities, in safe, loving families instead of institutions.

Special thanks to our partners and fellow presenters who continue to inspire and push forward the global movement for family-based care.

Let’s keep building a world where every child grows up in a family.

Today, we are celebrating a remarkable milestone — the closure of one of the institutions for children with disabilities in Musanze District; Centre Saint Vincent. This closure is the result of three years of dedicated partnership between the National Child Development Agency (NCDA), the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), the District of Musanze, and Hope and Homes for Children. During this time, 29 children and young persons with disabilities who were living in the institution have been supported to find loving and caring families — where they now belong.

A parent, representing others, shared a powerful testimony:
“When I received my nephew home, I didn’t believe that the reintegration program would be a success. But seeing how much he has improved, I am now a firm believer. He was not able to walk — now he can walk more than a mile from home. He couldn’t feed himself — now he eats on his own. My unbelief was transformed by the progress I’ve seen. He has become a huge blessing to our family.”

The Country Director of Hope and Homes for Children Rwanda Vidivi Immaculee Karangwa reflected:
“I never get enough of the amazing stories behind the reintegration of children with disabilities in families. These stories are a true source of courage. They remind us that love and care do wonders — they transform lives.”

In his closing remarks, the Guest of Honour, the Vice-Mayor in charge of Social Affairs of Musanze District, stated:
“The success of reintegrating children and young persons with disabilities into families is the result of a great partnership — between the District of Musanze, NCDA, NCPD, and Hope and Homes for Children. I want to thank all the staff from these institutions for the amazing work they have done. You are all behind the success we celebrate today.”

Today, we celebrate the National Day of MALAYIKA MURINZI! 🎉💛

This national day is dedicated to recognizing the remarkable Malayika Murinzi — the parents who have opened their homes and hearts to children without parental care. These everyday heroes are the backbone of Rwanda’s child care reform, making it possible for children to grow up in safe, loving families instead of institutions.

Their compassion and commitment have brought hope, healing, and belonging to countless children. Because of their unwavering support, no child is left behind — every child is given a chance to thrive in a family environment. We are coming together as a nation to honor and thank all Malayika Murinzi for their selfless love and the powerful role they play in shaping a better future for our children.

We celebrate the courage of parents like Monique, who have supported children with disabilities and protected them from institutionalization.
