Today we commemorate World Environment Day , where we recognize that a healthy environment is directly linked to good nutrition. Trees and ecosystems are making food for us by providing fruits, nuts, and supporting soil fertility for crops. They also absorb carbon, reduce climate change, conserve water, protect soil, improve air quality, and support biodiversity. This strengthens food security and healthier diets for families and children. Protecting nature means protecting our nutrition, health, and future generations through sustainable environmental stewardship and resilience.

Strengthening Environmental Stewardship Through Community Action

Today, through our Hygiene and Environmental Resilience Project, we joined local government leaders at the provincial level and community members during Umuganda in Butete Village, Burera district.

The activity focused on raising awareness about the importance of involving young people in environmental stewardship and building resilient communities. Youth have a critical role to play in protecting our environment and driving sustainable solutions for future generations.

We also emphasized the importance of hand hygiene, especially as Rwanda remains vigilant due to the Ebola outbreak reported in a neighboring country. Promoting good hygiene practices is essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and safeguarding public health.

We extend our sincere gratitude to for supporting the implementation of this project and empowering young people to create positive change in their communities

Heza Initiative was pleased to participate in career symposium 2026: Explore What’s Next! at The African Leadership University, a dynamic platform that brought together students, health professionals, innovators, and organizations committed to shaping the future of health in Africa.

At our booth, we showcased our work in addressing malnutrition through nutrition education materials, job aids, digital tools, and community-centered resources designed to improve health and nutrition outcomes. We also engaged students and partners in conversations around opportunities in the nutrition sector, youth leadership, and innovation in public health.

The event created valuable connections with future health leaders and encouraged ALU students to step forward and join efforts to build healthier and more resilient communities across Africa.

We appreciate the organizers of HealthX 2026 and all partners who made this impactful engagement possible.

Through Imena Program with , , and other partners, we trained and built the capacity of 500 frontline workers across five districts.

Today, these frontline workers can confidently deliver and share key messages on five important health and social protection behaviours in their communities.

We guided them and provided them the education materials, teaching guides like the one-egg package and the Imena learning tool to support their work.

Now, every frontline worker uses these tools to teach and explain clear, simple, and evidence-based messages to their people in villages.

They are now helping communities to understand important health information better and make good choices for their wellbeing.

The program showed that, working together can improve knowledge, strengthen confidence and bring positive change to people.

We are proud to see frontline workers making a real difference every day.

Capacity building is most effective when rooted in continuous mentoring and meaningful support.

Frontline functionaries (CHW, Para socials, village leaders, youth volunteers...) are the true drivers of impact, the untapped potential that can unlock real, lasting change. By investing in their growth through consistent guidance and support, we strengthen not just individuals, but entire communities.

At HEZA Initiative, we believe that even small, intentional efforts in mentoring can create powerful transformations.

When we engage communities, meaningful change happens. Through support groups and door to door visits, field teams connected with families, identified children who had missed vaccinations due to limited awareness, and supported caregivers to access services.
This effort helped ensure more children are protected and families feel confident in their health decisions.
