Every student has a story. For many, the journey has been marked by challenges, uncertainty, and displacement. Yet, within these stories lies resilience and strength. By embracing diversity and integrating IDPs and refugees into our community, we are building a generation of leaders who understand the power of perseverance and the importance of creating solutions for the continent.

We believe that talent knows no borders. Through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, young leaders who are refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) are finding a home for their dreams, their education, and their leadership journey. This program is not only about providing access, it is about restoring hope and creating pathways where none seemed possible.

Together, we are shaping a future where no dream is left behind and no potential is wasted. If you are a young leader with the passion to create impact and the courage to rise above challenges, this is your chance. Applications are now open for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at ALU.
Take the step today and be part of a community that believes in you.

A Full-Circle Moment for Our Mastercard Foundation Scholars!

At the just-ended ALU Class of 2022 Graduation, our Mastercard Foundation Scholars had the rare and inspiring opportunity to meet Reeta Roy, CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, the very force behind the scholarship that empowered their journeys.

The moment was made even more special with the presence of visionary leaders including Fred Swaniker, Founder and Chairman, African Leadership Group, Sunassee, CEO, African Leadership University, Hon. Joseph Nsengimana, Minister of Education, Rwanda, Elizabeth Tolu Ojo, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, ALU and many other distinguished guests who joined us to celebrate the next generation of changemakers.

This was more than a graduation, it was a powerful reminder of the partnerships and purpose driving Africa’s future.

We celebrated the strength, stories, and resilience of refugee and displaced scholars during our World Refugee Day 2025 event, held at The African Leadership University (ALU) Kigali Campus.

In a powerful collaboration between UR, ALU, Solid Minds, and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, we came together to honor voices of resilience through storytelling, performances, mental health reflections, and community conversations.

Recognition awards were also presented to RDP scholars who are doing incredible work in their communities, leading with heart, purpose, and impact.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, and stood in solidarity.
