Our Tanga Community staff and board went on their annual retreat in Gisenyi this year (2025), and it was truly one to remember. The days were filled with fun moments that brought everyone even closer, and the team-building games strengthened our bond in the best ways. During the retreat, we also took time to reflect, both personally and organizationally, on how we can continue to grow together.

As one staff member put it, “the retreat was one for the books.”

On our visit to HOCA and BHFO, two resilient transgender-led organizations, we learned about their inspiring journey of empowerment and advocacy.

They shared how it all began in 2003, when they first stood up for their rights and embraced their identities. Through SPECTRA’s research and continuous support, they discovered the SRHR challenges they face and found strength in knowing their voices matter.

Additionally, they also took part in SPECTRA’s awareness campaign, using their stories to raise community understanding about SRHR accessibility for transgender individuals.

We were honored to welcome our partners from the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) to our offices. AWDF, a non-governmental feminist organization that supports women’s rights and social justice initiatives across the continent, has been an incredible ally in advancing our shared vision.
