We’re currently studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount with the RIIO residents, and it has been so rich. Yesterday, as we studied Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25–34—“Do not be anxious”—the passage felt especially poignant. A recent Gallup survey found that 64% of Rwandans reported experiencing stress the previous day, tying Rwanda with Sierra Leone for the highest reported rate in the world. What a fitting moment to be reminded that Jesus offers us a different way to live.

Thanks to a generous gift from Langhorne Presbyterian Church, we were able to give each resident a new study Bible. One of the doctors shared how much the commentary notes have already enriched his life. He even told us how jealous his sister was of his new Bible! When he learned that we had sourced the Bibles locally, he was shocked—he had never seen a Bible like this before. Now he’s hoping to find one for his sister, too. ♥

Each Bible included a personal note along with Jesus’ words from John 10:10: “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full!”

That’s what we’re learning together—not simply what it means to know the Bible, but the life, joy, and purpose found in following Jesus.

Thank you, as always, for your tremendous generosity toward us and this ministry. Investing in these young eye surgeons is such a privilege. We’re grateful to walk alongside them as they become the hands and feet of Jesus in places where so many people need both physical and spiritual sight.

At 25 years old, Appoline was a dedicated teacher whose life took an unexpected turn when her vision began to fail.

When reading became difficult, her students laughed. Fear set in, and after a devastating fall on the school stairs, Appoline was forced to stop teaching. Isolated at home, she gave birth to her child—a baby whose face she had never seen.

Everything changed when a radio announcement led her to an eye surgical camp 200 kilometers away at Kongolo Hospital. Diagnosed with bilateral cataracts, Appoline underwent successful surgery in both eyes.

The moment her bandages were removed, her dream came true. She finally looked into the eyes of her baby for the first time.

Appoline arrived at Kongolo believing her future was over. Today, with her sight fully restored, she is preparing to step back into the classroom and reclaim the life she loved.

✨ Sight restored. Hope restored.

Donor gifts make stories like Appoline's possible by helping Dr. Toney and other Eye Love Africa partners bring sight-restoring care to hard-to-reach places.

From operating on this little guy for congenital glaucoma when he was just a 3-month-old baby to seeing him as a thriving 4-year-old with near-perfect vision! 🥹✨

I had the absolute joy of seeing this champ back in the clinic yesterday. Honestly, I didn’t even recognize him at first because he’s grown so much! Moments like these—seeing a former tiny surgery patient growing up happy, healthy, and seeing the world clearly—are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

So grateful to his amazing mom who faithfully brought him to his appointments over the last 4 years. 💙👁️

Experiences like this inspire me to keep teaching and training the next generation of eye surgeons. Passing on these surgical skills so others can experience the incredible joy of saving a child's sight makes every moment worth it.

“Cookin' Cataracts” explored something surprisingly practical: determining the optimal microwave time for porcine 🐷 eyes to create a cataract model for surgical training.

Behind the unusual name is a serious goal—strengthening ophthalmic education and improving surgical teaching tools. A reminder that innovation in eye care education can come from unexpected places.

Thanks Dr. Agnes Owete for helping us bring it to the finish line! 🏁 Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology Ann Arbor Christian School

Slow clinic day at Kibagabaga turned into hands-on learning—calibrating Goldmann tonometers, the standard tool used to measure intraocular pressure and help detect glaucoma early. Strengthening skills, strengthening eye care. No learning moment wasted in the mission to eliminate preventable blindness.

We are heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Dr. Vincent Magubo Nyagucha, RIIO Class of 2025.

Dr. Vincent was more than a brilliant eye surgeon and compassionate physician; he was a cherished colleague and friend. He approached his work with a spirit of excellence and a genuine heart for his patients.

We are sharing these photos to look back on his time with us, remembering his dedication, his smile, and the lives he touched during his time in Rwanda.

We send our love, thoughts, and prayers to his family and loved ones in Kenya. May they find comfort and strength in the days ahead. 💔

"Be near us, O God. Be near each of us who must reckon with the sorrow of death and the sting of separation, for what we feel in this loss is nothing less than the groan of all creation." (Every Moment Holy, Volume I Douglas McKelvey)

🌍 A Huge Milestone for Eye Care in Rwanda! 🇷🇼

It takes a village, and on Tuesday, that village achieved something historic.

Thanks to the incredible school screening efforts supported by Direct Aid and implemented by Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology, a student diagnosed with keratoconus successfully underwent Corneal Cross-linking (CCL) surgery at Kibagabaga Hospital!

This marks a massive milestone:
--The first CCL procedure using RIIO's brand-new, state-of-the-art setup, generously provided by the Cure Blindness Project.
--Believed to be the very first CCL program launched in a public hospital in Rwanda!

This life-changing procedure will help preserve sight for countless youth dealing with progressive corneal conditions, making specialized eye care more accessible than ever before.

A massive congratulations and thank you to the incredible partners who made this dream a reality. This is a masterclass in collaboration! 🤝

Introducing the newest cohort at the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology — four residents from three countries, united by one mission: quality eye care access for all. 💙

We’re proud to welcome them to RIIO’s growing community, now 17 residents strong. Today's lesson: mastering the basics of the eye exam.

Same desk, double the opinions.
Dynamic duo, reporting for duty.
Even a quick overlap moves the vision forward.
Rare sighting: same office, same time. Still deciding who’s the boss.
Different roles, same mission. Powering through together.

🔧 This surgical microscope traveled across two borders to be fixed.

Not because the repair was impossible — but because the expertise was hard to find.

The WHO estimates that up to 70% of medical equipment in sub-Saharan Africa is out of service, often due to a lack of trained biomedical technicians and spare parts.

In this photo, Dr. Toney brought his broken microscope all the way from Congo, working alongside Dr. John and a how-to video from the manufacturer to bring it back to life.

One repaired microscope = better care and restored sight.

Imagine what could happen if repair skills were locally available everywhere. 💙
