DANUBIUS-RO 2026 Conference Opens Its First Edition!

On July 7-8, 2026, at the Institutul Național de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Științe Biologice headquarters in Bucharest, Romania, the DANUBIUS-RI community will come together for a conference dedicated to the research of river-sea systems, covering topics such as water, sediments, biodiversity, climate, pollution, digital technologies, and solutions for complex ecosystems.

The event marks an important step in strengthening Romania’s contribution to the pan-European DANUBIUS-RI research infrastructure.

📢 The Ocean Literacies in Early Childhood: Outdoor Education and Learning for Sustainability toolkit is now available!

Developed thanks to the Kindergarten of the Lagoon project in Venice, within the framework of , this publication explores how ocean literacy can begin from the earliest years of life through outdoor, place-based learning experiences that nurture curiosity and connection with nature.
Designed as a practical resource for educators and outdoor learning practitioners, the toolkit shares activities, pedagogical approaches, and reflections to help bring ocean learning into early childhood education across diverse contexts and environments.

🐟 Black Sea sturgeons remain among Europe’s most endangered fish species.

Although the indefinite fishing ban for sturgeon species in the Bulgarian section of the Danube River and the Black Sea entered into force on 1 January 2026, conservation challenges continue across the region.

Habitat fragmentation, pollution, illegal fishing, and climate pressure still threaten the long-term survival of sturgeon populations in the Black Sea Basin.

Recent conservation efforts highlighted by WWF Bulgaria include:
• habitat restoration
• scientific monitoring
• restocking programmes
• identification of new protected areas
• regional cooperation for sturgeon protection

Projects such as SturNet support long-term collaboration between research institutions, environmental organizations, and regional partners working to improve conservation, monitoring, and sustainable management across the Black Sea region.

Protecting sturgeons also means protecting river connectivity, biodiversity, and the ecological future of the Black Sea Basin.

🌊 at the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership Symposium - Bucharest, 11 February 2026

Today, our Project Coordinator Adrian Stanica delivered an inspiring talk at the 2nd Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership Symposium – “Full Sail Ahead towards a Sustainable Blue Economy” in Bucharest, Romania.

As General Director of INCD GeoEcoMar, Interim Director of DANUBIUS-ERIC, and Coordinator of the DOORS Black Sea project, Adrian highlighted the unique past, present and future of the Black Sea - a basin that connects continents, cultures, and river systems, and holds immense potential for science-driven sustainable development.

In his address, he underlined:
🔹 The Black Sea’s distinct ecological characteristics and its sensitivity to global change
🔹 The critical role of river-sea systems, especially the Danube-Black Sea continuum
🔹 The regional and global value of Romania-lead DANUBIUS-ERIC interdisciplinary research infrastructure, supporting integrated studies from rivers to seas
🔹 The Black Sea region’s rich cultural heritage spanning millennia
🔹 The importance of science, innovation, and regional cooperation in advancing a sustainable
