An institutional compass for the major challenges facing Hellenism.

The official closing of the "Nisyros Dialogues 2026"® took place in the most iconic manner at the square of Nikia, atop the caldera, featuring as keynote speaker the President Emeritus of the Council of State and former Prime Minister, Mr. Panagiotis Pikrammenos.

In a wide-ranging speech, Mr. Pikrammenos touched upon Greek -Turkish relations, democracy, and the challenges of technological progress, focusing in a dramatic yet realistic manner on the demographic crisis. As he characteristically highlighted, a Greece with a population of 5.5 million inhabitants in 30–40 years will carry no weight against a neighboring country of 110–120 million.

Confronted with this complex and threatening geopolitical context, the former Prime Minister delivered a resounding message of national responsibility, emphasizing the imperative need for:

▪ Cooperation and consensus among all political forces in the country.
▪ Flexibility and decisiveness in decision-making.

The Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation warmly thanks Mr. Pikrammenos for his invaluable presence, which sealed the high caliber of this year’s "Dialogues."

Το επίσημο κλείσιμο των «Διαλόγους της Νισύρου 2026»® πραγματοποιήθηκε με τον πιο εμβληματικό τρόπο στην πλατεία των Νικειών, στην κορυφή της καλντέρας, με κεντρικό ομιλητή τον Πρόεδρο του Συμβουλίου της Επικρατείας ε.τ. και π. Πρωθυπουργό, κ. Παναγιώτη Πικραμμένο.

Σε μια ομιλία εφ' όλης της ύλης, ο κ. Πικραμμένος αναφέρθηκε στα ελληνοτουρκικά, τη δημοκρατία και τις προκλήσεις της τεχνολογικής εξέλιξης, εστιάζοντας με δραματικό αλλά ρεαλιστικό τρόπο στο δημογραφικό πρόβλημα. Όπως υπογράμμισε χαρακτηριστικά, μια Ελλάδα με πληθυσμό 5,5 εκατομμυρίων κατοίκων σε 30-40 χρόνια δεν θα διαθέτει καμία βαρύτητα απέναντι σε μια γειτονική χώρα 110-120 εκατομμυρίων

Μπροστά σε αυτό το σύνθετο και απειλητικό γεωπολιτικό πλαίσιο, ο πρώην Πρωθυπουργός έστειλε ένα ηχηρό μήνυμα εθνικής ευθύνης, τονίζοντας την επιτακτική ανάγκη για:

Diplomatic acumen and the reading of regional balances in a changing geopolitical environment.

At this year’s "Nisyros Dialogues 2026"®, Ambassador (ret.) and former Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Paraskevopoulos, shared his profound knowledge and long institutional experience regarding the strategic challenges facing Greece and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

The course of international events itself underscored the significance and foresight of the analysis presented. The title of the session in which Mr. Paraskevopoulos participated proved prophetic: "The Doubtful Peace: Geostrategic and Geo-energy Developments — Prospects, Shifts, and Constants," as just a few days later, the peace agreement collapsed and military operations resumed in Iran, disrupting the delicate balance in the Strait of Hormuz and global markets.

Through his intervention, Mr. Paraskevopoulos highlighted:

▪ The delicate balances of foreign policy in an era where the redistribution of power is redefining the security architecture.
▪ The need for steady reflexes, proactive diplomacy, and strategic flexibility in the face of unpredictable regional escalations.

Στους φετινούς «Διαλόγους της Νισύρου 2026»®, ο Πρέσβης ε.τ. και πρώην Γενικός Γραμματέας του Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών, Δημήτρης Παρασκευόπουλος, κατέθεσε τη βαθιά του γνώση και τη μακρά θεσμική του εμπειρία γύρω από τις στρατηγικές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει η Ελλάδα και η ευρύτερη περιοχή της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου.

Geopolitical fluidity, deterrent power, and the resolve to defend national interests.

At this year’s "Nisyros Dialogues 2026"®, Admiral (ret.) and former Minister of National Defence, Evangelos Apostolakis, presented a profound and pragmatic analysis of our region’s fragile military and geopolitical balances, while sending a clear message of strategic readiness.

Mr. Apostolakis firmly emphasized that in an environment of stark challenges, Greece must be prepared to actively uphold and defend its "red lines" in practice.

Subsequent developments dramatically confirmed the foresight of the discussion. The title of the session in which he participated proved prophetic: "The Doubtful Peace: Geostrategic and Geo-energy Developments — Prospects, Shifts, and Constants" as just a few days later, military operations resumed in Iran, disrupting the delicate balance in the Strait of Hormuz and global markets.

Key issues highlighted during the discussion included:

▪ The need to maintain strong deterrent power and readiness to defend sovereign rights.
▪ The critical importance of securing maritime routes and energy choke points amid widespread instability.

Στους φετινούς «Διαλόγους της Νισύρου 2026»®, ο ναύαρχος ε.α. και πρώην Υπουργός Εθνικής Άμυνας, Ευάγγελος Αποστολάκης, κατέθεσε τη βαθιά και ρεαλιστική του ανάλυση για τις εύθραυστες στρατιωτικές και γεωπολιτικές ισορροπίες της περιοχής μας, στέλνοντας παράλληλα ένα σαφές μήνυμα στρατηγικής ετοιμότητας.

Ο κ. Αποστολάκης υπογράμμισε με έμφαση ότι σε ένα περιβάλλον ορθάνοιχτων προκλήσεων, η Ελλάδα οφείλει να είναι διατεθειμένη να στηρίζει και να υπερασπίζεται στην πράξη τις "κόκκινες γραμμές" της.

Energy at the core of strategic confrontation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Energy session at this year’s "Nisyros Dialogues 2026"® evolved into one of the most dynamic and interactive discussions of the event. Featuring Costas Mathioudakis and Fanis Papathanasiou, along with active contributions from the audience and panel speakers, key energy strategies and opportunities for Greece were captured in a single session.

The discussion analyzed in depth:

▪ The pivotal role of hydrocarbons, the prospects for Renewable Energy Sources (RES), geothermal energy, and nuclear power.

▪ The critical delays in grid and storage infrastructure, which pose the main obstacle to energy resilience.

In an environment where the demand for hydrocarbons will remain strong for the next three decades, the session underscored Greece’s imperative to immediately tap into its own resources while pragmatically accelerating the green transition.

Η ενέργεια στο επίκεντρο της στρατηγικής αντιπαράθεσης στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο.

Η θεματική ενότητα της Ενέργειας στους φετινούς «Διαλόγους της Νισύρου 2026»® εξελίχθηκε σε έναν από τους πιο δυναμικούς και αμφίδρομους διαλόγους της διοργάνωσης. Με τη συμμετοχή του Κώστα Μαθιουδάκη και του Φάνη Παπαθανασίου, καθώς και με ενεργές παρεμβάσεις από το κοινό και τους υπόλοιπους ομιλητές, συμπυκνώθηκαν μέσα σε ένα διάλογο οι βασικές ενεργειακές στρατηγικές και οι ευκαιρίες για τη χώρα μας.

At this year’s "Nisyros Dialogues 2026"® (July 3–5), PASOK MEP and Vice-President of the S&D Group, Yiannis Maniatis, in an exceptionally timely discussion moderated by Maria Sarafoglou, sounded the alarm on the need to benchmark and safeguard against Turkish involvement in European defense programs.

Just two days later, the NATO Summit in Ankara (July 7–8) confirmed his warnings almost verbatim, as the Turkish leadership described any restrictions on third-country participation in these programs as "strategic vulnerabilities."

Furthermore, the title of the session, "The Doubtful Peace: Geostrategic and Geo-energy Developments — Prospects, Shifts, and Constants" proved prophetic. Just a few days later, peace was fractured as military operations resumed in Iran, disrupting the delicate balance in the Strait of Hormuz and the global markets.

In this explosive environment, Mr. Maniatis highlighted two critical priorities:

▪️Defense Autonomy: Of the €450 billion currently spent on defense by EU member states, 80% goes to suppliers outside the Union. These investments must support European industry instead.
▪️Energy Security: With the demand for hydrocarbons remaining strong for the next 30 years and international markets reeling from developments in the Middle East, Greece must tap into its own resources while simultaneously accelerating the green transition.

The "Nisyros Dialogues" do not merely record the current juncture. They anticipate it.

Όταν η στρατηγική ανάλυση προηγείται των γεγονότων.

Στους φετινούς «Διαλόγους της Νισύρου 2026»® (3-5 Ιουλίου), ο ευρωβουλευτής του ΠΑΣΟΚ και αντιπρόεδρος του S&D, Γιάννης Μανιάτης, σε έναν εξαιρετικά επίκαιρο διάλογο με συντονίστρια τη Μαρία Σαράφογλου, έκρουσε τον κώδωνα του κινδύνου για την ανάγκη περιχαράκωσης της τουρκικής συμμετοχής στα ευρωπαϊκά αμυντικά προγράμματα.

Μόλις δύο ημέρες αργότερα, η Σύνοδος Κορυφής του ΝΑΤΟ στην Άγκυρα (7-8 Ιουλίου) επιβεβαίωσε σχεδόν κατά γράμμα τις προειδοποιήσεις του, με την τουρκική ηγεσία να χαρακτηρίζει ως "στρατηγικά τρωτά σημεία" κάθε περιορισμό στη συμμετοχή τρίτων χωρών στα προγράμματα αυτά.

Επίσης, προφητικός αποδείχτηκε ο τίτλος του Διαλόγου «Η Αμφίβολη Ειρήνη, Γεωστρατηγικές και Γεωενεργειακές Εξελίξεις - Προοπτικές, Αλλαγές και Αμετάβλητες Καταστάσεις» καθώς μόλις μερικά 24ώρα αργότερα, έσπασε η ειρήνη και επανεκκίνησαν οι πολεμικές επιχειρήσεις στο Ιράν, διαταράσσοντας την ευαίσθητη ισορροπία στα Στενά του Ορμούζ και τις αγορές.

Σε αυτό το εκρηκτικό περιβάλλον, ο κ. Μανιάτης ανέδειξε δύο κρίσιμες προτεραιότητες:

▪️Αμυντική Αυτονομία: Από τα 450 δισ. ευρώ που δαπανούν σήμερα τα κράτη-μέλη για την άμυνα, το 80% καταλήγει σε προμηθευτές εκτός ΕΕ. Οι επενδύσεις αυτές πρέπει να στηρίζουν την ευρωπαϊκή βιομηχανία.
▪️Ενεργειακή Ασφάλεια: Με την ανάγκη για υδρογονάνθρακες να παραμένει έντονη για τα επόμενα 30 χρόνια και τις διεθνείς αγορές να κλυδωνίζονται από τις εξελίξεις στη Μέση Ανατολή, η Ελλάδα οφείλει να αξιοποιήσει τους δικούς της πόρους, επιταχύνοντας παράλληλα την πράσινη μετάβαση.

🧭Recap of the «Nisyros Dialogues»® 2026: The Analysis Confirmed by Events

A few days have passed since the conclusion of yet another successful edition of the «Nisyros Dialogues»® which concluded successfully on Sunday, 5 July, under the theme "The Eastern Mediterranean in a State of Strategic Confrontation, War, Realignment and the Making of a New Security & Energy Architecture," and the auspices of H.E. President Constantine An. Tassoulas and the permanent auspices of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

The time that has elapsed, along with developments in current affairs, has confirmed just how accurate the reading of Eastern Mediterranean dynamics presented at the «Dialogues» truly was — a reading that did not merely capture a momentary snapshot, but identified in good time the trends that would go on to shape the developments of the following days.

Just two days after the close of the «Dialogues», the NATO Summit in Ankara (7–8 July) once again brought Greek-Turkish relations to the forefront, with the confrontation centering on the F-35s and casus belli, as well as on European defence procurement programmes — with the Turkish leadership labeling any effort to hinder its participation a "strategic vulnerability" - confirming the warning issued on Nisyros by Yannis Maniatis on the need to restrict Turkish participation in precisely these programmes.
