D I V U L G A M O S
Sinopse:
We are just under eight billion. Fifty years ago there were only half as many people.
But the fact that we are too many is not only due to our numbers, but above all to the resource consumption of each individual. Before one of us in Europe, for example, wakes up, we have already consumed more commercial energy than a farming family of 28 in a country like Ethiopia or Nigeria.
In Africa, the population will double. But "overpopulation"; has two faces: while population growth in poorer countries worsens the living conditions of most, people in the rich industrial nations live beyond their means. With a carbon dioxide equivalent of 10.7 tonnes per year, Germany, for example, is many times overpopulated, experts say. The "double overpopulation"; can be determined on the one hand by the actual increase in population, and on the other hand by the effects of the respective lifestyles on the ecosystems. One problem is a kind of continuing population explosion, the other a never-ending consumption explosion. Neither is sustainable on a finite planet.
The proof of this is China, where the population is shrinking while the country has
risen to become the world's largest CO2 emitter.
There are ways out of the cycle of overpopulation combined with poverty, through
education for example. But those who break out of the cycle of poverty enter the
cycle of consumption. Are there ways out of the cycle of consumption? That is what
the film wants to find out.
Is there a way out of the trilemma: "population growth, increasing energy
consumption and ruin of ecosystems"?
