Sheik Amr Arafat Foundation
Saba and Afaf Arafat have long considered setting up a charitable foundation which would honor their father's name and their family's history. The latter is 2000 years old and is regarded by UNISCO of "outstanding universal value" according to article 12 of the World Heritage Convention. It would also initiate and carry out projects that would revitalize the city both
socially and culturally. Further its authentic architecture would not be over looked. One important project has been completed, and is in good working order; it is in the Cultural Heritage Center, formerly the Arafat soap factory which architect Naseer Arafat renovated. It combines an art gallery, a library, a lecture hall and soap museum, also included art rooms factories such as pottery, ceramics and weaving of wool carpets, in addition to the above, the foundation would extend financial support to needy students in local universities and to young individuals wanting to start small businesses. Saba et Afaf Arafat ont envisagé depuis longtemps de créer une fondation charitable qui honorerait le nom de leur père et l'histoire de la famille. Elle susciterait à nouveau de l'intérêt pour la vieille ville de Naplouse, vieille de 2000 ans et considérée par l'UNESCO comme un patrimoine "d'une valeur universelle exceptionnelle" en accord avec l'article 12 de la Convention sur le Patrimoine Mondial. Cela permettrait de lancer et de mener à bien des projets qui redonneraient vie à la ville tant sur le plan social que culturel, sans délaisser l'architecture traditionnelle. La fondation a été créée en 1997 déjà. Un projet important a été réalisé et fonctionne bien; c'est au sein du Centre du Patrimoine Culturel, l'ancienne savonnerie Arafat que l'architecte Naseer Arafat a rénovée. Ce centre comprend une galerie d'art, une bibliothèque, une salle de lecture et un musée du savon tout comme des ateliers d'artisanat tels que poterie, céramique et tissage de tapis en laine et en plus de ce qui est énoncé ci - dessus, la fondation apporterait son soutien financier aux étudiants des universités locales dans le besoin et aux jeunes désireux de lancer de petites entreprises. Le projet dédié à la savonnerie sera suivi par celui d'un centre de formation qui doit être construit sur un terrain près de l'Université de Najah.
مؤسسة الشيخ عمرو عرفات الخيرية
قامت سبأ وعفاف عرفات في العام 1997 بتأسيس جمعية خيرية تحمل اسم والدهما الشيخ عمرو عرفات والذي تم اختيار اسم المؤسسة تخليداً لذكراه، وجزءاً من تاريخ عائلتهما. وتلقت المربية سبأ تعليمها العالي كأخصائية في اللغة الانجليزية في انجلترا وأمريكا، وعملت خبيرة في منظمة اليونسكو للثقافة والعلوم ومديرة لقسم التعليم في وكالة الغوث في الضفة الغربية، وهي عضو في مجلس أمناء جامعة بير زيت. أما عفاف فهي فنانة تشكيلية تلقت علومها في انجلترا وأمريكا، وكانت مسؤولة عن وضع مناهج التربية الفنية في وزارة التربية والتعليم الأردنية وعملت بعد ذلك خبيرة للفنون التشكيلية والتطبيقية في منظمة اليونسكو.
وتهدف مؤسسة الشيخ عمرو عرفات إلى خلق وتنفيذ مشاريع خيرية تعمل على إحياء البلدة القديمة في مدينة نابلس في عدة مجالات اجتماعية وثقافية وعمرانية. ويدخل في عملها رفد الحياة الثقافية، ودعم الطلبة المحتاجين في الجامعات المحلية وتقديم معونات عينية محدودة للفئة المحتاجة مما يمكن أفرادها من إنشاء عمل مستقل والاستغناء عن حاجة الآخرين.
ومن أهم مشاريع المؤسسة المشار اليها اعلاه، إنشاء مركز إحياء وتنمية التراث الثقافي في مدينة نابلس وهو عبارة عن مبنى مصبنة عرفات التاريخي المشار إليه. وهو يضم معرضا للفنون ومكتبة وقاعة محاضرات ومتحفاً لصناعة الصابون، وكذلك لإنتاج الحرف التقليدية كالخزف والنسيج.
ويعتبر مشروع ترميم المصبنة باكورة عمل المؤسسة والذي سيتم إتباعه بمركز ثقافي تنموي على قطعة الأرض المخصصة لهذا الغرض، قرب جامعة النجاح الوطنية بنابلس والتي تبرعت بها سبأ وعفاف عرفات.
