Hi there! Rosa has polycystic kidney disease, which is an inherited disorder where cysts develop in the kidney causing them to lose function overtime. While she’s been taking medications and changing her diet, it has not been enough. Now that she is close to renal failure, she has three options: dialysis, deceased organ donation or a living donor. Unfortunately, the average life expectancy of those in dialysis is 5-10 years with a reduced quality of life because of the daily or multiple weekly dialysis treatments. On the other hand, transplants can last much longer, but the average wait for a kidney donation is 3-5 years. Every day 13 people die while waiting for a kidney transplant. We don’t want to wait! So, we are hopeful we will find a living donor, so my mom has the best chance at living a healthy life for many more years to come. If you are interested in potentially being a living donor, the first step is to complete this survey (there's no commitment)- https://houstonmethodistlivingdonor.org/ and help us spread the word by following and sharing this page!
