Elimu Goal was well represented at the Internal Displacement in Ukraine, a powerful event co-hosted by McGill University and University of Warsaw.
The discussion brought together researchers, international organizations, NGOs, and most importantly internally displaced persons (IDPs) and community leaders whose voices grounded the entire conversation in lived reality.
What stood out most were the human stories behind the statistics.
We heard firsthand accounts of displacement of families forced to leave everything behind, of uncertainty becoming a daily norm, and of resilience in the face of prolonged instability in Ukraine.
We also gained insight into institutional responses. Representatives discussed state-supported assistance mechanisms available to IDPs, including financial aid programs and compensation schemes aimed at helping displaced individuals cover basic living costs and rebuild stability. While these efforts are critical, the conversations highlighted ongoing gaps, particularly in accessibility, long-term sustainability, and alignment with the realities on the ground.
What made this event especially meaningful was the intersection of policy, research, and lived experience. It was not just about discussing displacement it was about listening, understanding, and rethinking how support systems can be more humane, inclusive, and effective.
Moments like this are a reminder: behind every policy discussion are real people, real lives, and real futures at stake.
