On 1 August, we were very happy to welcome Lisa Smith at our event.
Lisa is a Romani film producer and currently works with the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism (Heidelberg University). She presented a series of animated documentary short films honoring the memory of the Roma and Sinti victims of the systematic genocide in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. Each short film in the series employs different animation techniques. Moving beyond conventional approaches to historical trauma, these films illuminate stories of resistance and solidarity.

The Ujvari Family about the young Adam Ujvari;
I Sang Again, telling the story of Emilie Machálková;
Listen, picturing the life of Lidija Krylova; Roads Without Caravans, an animated protrait of Mareo Maximoff.

The film screening event and workshop is organized by the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism (Heidelberg University) in cooperation with Dikh He Na Bister & ternype International Roma Youth Network . It is supported by the „Live Democracy!“ Programme of the German Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ), within the framework of the “Cooperation Network against Antigypsyism”.

Ob 31.7.25 we visited the Museum to learn about the history of this horrifying place. We learned about the lives lost to murder, deliberate sickness, slave labor, starvation and countless forms of violence.

Yet, it was a powerful experience to learn together with so many other interested and intelligent young people. Especially the exhibition about the Genocide of Roma and Sinti during the Holocaust, established by the Documentation Centre in Heidelberg, Germany was important during our visit.

We already showed you some photos of our new exhibition, today let’s look back at the opening night: 15 years of Dikh He Na Bister called for something special, and our exhibition team delivered. Mihai and Donald introduced our guests to the exhibition, guiding them through the different sections and topics. We were also very happy to have Oktvavio with us, an amazing young artist contributing to our exhibition.
And with an invitiation to explore, to engage and contribute to the exhibition, Rebecca „closed the opening“ and the crowd started reading and discussing.
And remember: Our exhibition is now all packed up in boxes, ready to be shipped and waiting to see new cities and meet young Roma all over Europe!
Get in touch with us if you are interested to bring it to your event or local community!

Today would have been Raymond Gurême‘s 100. birthday. And even 5 years after is death, we still carried his testimony and activism through our Dikh He Na Bister initiative last week. He touched so many of our lives and we miss him dearly.

After leaving the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial on 2 August, we spent the afternoon at the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oświęcim .official to speak to Dieter Flack, Christian Pfeil and Edward Dębicki, three Holocaust survivors from Germany and Poland.

“We are here because survivors chose not to be silent. Because they trusted us enough to tell us. They gave us more than memory. They gave us direction. And today, we are here to honour that gift, with our presence, and our commitment.” - Mihai Oancea .oancea95 , speaking on behalf of young Roma and non-Roma.

These are the six amazing working groups of Dikh He Na Bister 2025, with participants from various backgrounds, speaking different languages - learing with and from each other over the 5-day program. We could not be more proud of your achievements!
(Sorry if anyone is missing from the photos - it was at times difficult to catch the entire group 😁!)

And a big thank you again to the facilitators who carefully guided their groups through difficult topics and emotional journeys. You took this challenge and did an outstanding job, really!

On 3 August 2014, the terrorist organisation ISIS overran Yazidi communities in Iraq, killing approximately 5,000 people and enslaving thousands of Yazidi women and children. The fate of many men, women and children remains unknown.

In 2016, the UN recognised the genocide against the Yazidis, yet many still live in dangerous conditions in refugee camps in the region or face the risk of forced removal from the European countries they fled to.

We demand safe living conditions for all Yazidis and adequate support for the survivors of the genocide.

On this day, we remember all Sinti and Roma who were killed during the Holocaust. On the night of 2 August 1944, almost 4,300 Roma and Sinti people, including many children, were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
We gathered in front of the ruins of crematorium 5 at Auschwitz Birkenau.

Sofia spoke to honour the victims and keep their memory alive. Together we had a moment of silence to remember the people who were killed here. Dimitri and Prodromos read their poem about Auschwitz and Diana spoke about her memories of survivors. The Roma youth Pledge was spoken by Maria and the painting titled „Bloody Truth“ was created by Petar. Our commemoration was closed with a performance of Gelem Gelem by Stelina. During the song, we laid flowers to show respect and remember the loss.

We remember. We stand together against prejudice and hate.

Remembering the past means taking responsibility for the present. On this day 81 years ago the SS murdered 4.300 Roma and Sinti children, women and men in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, we mourn them and we mourn the loss of more than 500,000 Roma and Sinti who were murdered during the Holocaust.

In 2025, we mark the 15th anniversary of Dikh He Na Bister, an initiative built on the intergenerational dialogue between Holocaust survivors and young Roma and non-Roma. Through learning about the Roma Holocaust and both historical and contemporary antigypsyism we establish a society where young people will write their own story and act as agents of change.

This year marks also a decade since 2 August was officially recognised by the European Parliament as the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day in April 2015. These two anniversaries are deeply connected, because it was through the persistent mobilisation of young people, survivors, educators, and activists within the Dikh He Na Bister movement that the significance of 2 August became impossible to ignore.
This dual anniversary reminds us that history does not speak for itself, it must be spoken for. Recognition was not given. It was achieved through years of grassroots pressure and intergenerational dialogue. The on-going fight for the recognition of our history and identity fuels youth-led commitment to equality, justice, and combating antigypsyism.

Recognition is not a final step, it’s part of a longer journey that we walk together. As we look ahead to the 15th anniversary of Dikh He Na Bister, we remind ourselves that remembrance must lead to responsibility. Now it’s on us to keep that recognition alive, in education, in activism, in everyday conversations.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Dikh He Na Bister, we have build the exhibition “Amen sam terne” to tell our story, our truth: We are the youth, we echo the voices of our ancestors, and build the voice of our generation.

We trace Roma Youth Movements - Dikh He Na Bister and more - and present strong young voices from our communities. You will even spot some of our team members and participants in the exhibition!
Many Roads, One Heart - from one voice to another: We invite you to become a part of the exhibition, with a message, a hope, a note, and to also take something with you. Tiri zor, miri zor - your power, my power.

Today we open the exhibition - with creators, participants, artists, and all of you. We are especially proud that we can display original artwork by the artists Emanuel Barica Oktavio Kazanxhiu Denis Nanciu Anna Rabko and Delfin Lakatosz
