AWARE AWARE is a not for profit civil society organisation working in southern districts of Sindh, Pakistan. For Thar Desert we have initiated pilot projects.

ASSOCIATION FOR WATER APPLIED EDUCATION & RENEWABLE ENERGY (AWARE) was formed in spring 2003 and registered under Societies Act 1860 # 4142 on February 12,2005. The focus of the Organization is arid and semi arid areas of District Tharparkar and Umerkot. AWARE is ever cautious and keeps a hawkish eye over the all emerging issues, concerns, problems and difficulties. AWARE has vast idea to ease opportunities and find out the ways and means to develop the target area. Renewable Energy and Applied Education are focused for poverty reduction, as we believe in the development through local resources. In command area due to water shortage and degradation of land and increasing desertification are main driving forces to redevelop the concepts and practical approaches. An intensive study of underground water quality in Thar is conducted with support of Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories Complex Karachi, Neuron Medicine Department of Dow Medical University Karachi, Geology Department of Karachi University & Center of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry Jamshoro, an intensive study of water quality in Thar was conducted and this took more than 05 years in completion. Holistic approach is on preference. AWARE focuses three main components as clear by name but relates all aspects. In isolation we can’t develop any thing, this is our strategy to take an entry point and then expand with integrated approaches. All the issues and problems of society are in focus and preferences are given with nature, intensity and importance. This will result far lucrative to deprived and marginalized segments of society. To be an endeavoring and an effective contributor to the establishment of a society, where people determine their choices in life and influence the direction of change. MISSION
To organize, aware, strengthen and empower the marginalized sectors of population to enabling them to influence social, political and economic policies and decision making to make possible to establish a society based on social justice, equity, equality and human dignity

• To organize different sectors of population in order to involve the community in: identifying, understanding the community needs; identification, development, management and judicious use of natural resources particularly Renewable Energy resources; and development, management, improvement and maintenance of public facility(ies)
• To organize seminars, workshops, training courses, lecture programmes, walks, rallies, celebrations, demonstrations, trips etc. in order to raise socio-economic, socio-political awareness among all the segments of society.
• To provide the people suitable economic and research activities to build their development, management and leadership capacities/capabilities and to improve/develop their occupational/professional skills so as to strengthen their economic position.
• To provide the people educational, healthcare, recreational facilities and cultural activities for their personality building

🎥 Breaking Barriers, Building Dreams | Rizwana Umrani’s Journey

At Aawaz Umerkot Melo 2026, Miss. Rizwana Umrani, a young woman from a rural background, shared her inspiring personal journey of overcoming barriers and pursuing her education and dreams.

Living with a physical disability, Rizwana faced challenges along the way, but continued her education with determination and went on to become a Software Engineer. Her journey carries a powerful message about the potential of girls and young persons with disabilities when they have access to education, encouragement and opportunities.

Her story also draws attention to the importance of creating inclusive educational opportunities, particularly for girls with disabilities from rural communities, so that physical, social or economic barriers do not stand between them and their aspirations.

🌟 At the Melo, Rizwana spoke in her own voice about the hurdles she faced, the journey she travelled and what helped her move forward.

🎥 Know Your Rights, Raise Your Voice | Advocate Muhammad Bux Kumbhar at Aawaz Umerkot Melo 2026

At Aawaz Umerkot Melo 2026, Advocate Muhammad Bux Kumbhar shared his views on the important role of social and civil society organizations in creating awareness about people’s rights and empowering communities to understand, exercise and claim those rights.

He emphasized that meaningful social change begins when people are aware of their rights, have access to information, and are able to raise their voices and engage with relevant institutions for the realization of those rights.

His message reflected a central spirit of Aawaz-II: strengthening community voices, promoting rights awareness and enabling people, particularly marginalized groups, to participate more effectively in decisions that affect their lives.

🐾 World Rabies Day | 28 September 🐕 ڇِتي جانور جي ڏنگ کان بچاءَ جو عالمي ڏينهن | 28 سيپٽمبر
ڇِتي جانور جو ڏنگ جان ليوا ٿي سگهي ٿو، پر وقت سر احتياط ۽ صحيح علاج سان قيمتي جان بچائي سگهجي ٿي.
جيڪڏهن ڪتو يا ڪو ٻيو شڪي جانور چڪ هڻي يا رهنڊ وجهي ته زخم کي فوراً صابڻ ۽ وهندڙ صاف پاڻي سان گهٽ ۾ گهٽ 15 منٽن تائين چڱيءَ طرح ڌوئو ۽ بنا دير ويجهي اسپتال يا صحت مرڪز پهچو. ڊاڪٽر جي صلاح موجب بچاءَ جي ويڪسين ضرور لڳرايو ۽ علاج ۾ ڪنهن به قسم جي دير نه ڪريو.
اويئر عوام کي اپيل ڪري ٿو ته جانور جي چڪ يا رهنڊ کي معمولي نه سمجهيو. ٻارن کي رولو ۽ شڪي جانورن کان پري رکو، پالتو ڪتن کي وقت سر ويڪسين لڳرايو ۽ ڪنهن به شڪي جانور جي چڪ کان پوءِ فوري طور طبي مدد حاصل ڪريو.
⚠️ ياد رکو: ڇِتي جانور جي ڏنگ کان پوءِ دير نه ڪريو، ترت علاج زندگي بچائي سگهي ٿو.
🐾 سجاڳي وڌايو، احتياط ڪريو، زندگيون بچايو.
Rabies is preventable, but once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal. World Rabies Day is an important reminder that timely action after an animal bite can save a life.
If bitten or scratched by a dog or another potentially rabid animal, immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for about 15 minutes and seek medical care without delay. A healthcare professional can assess the need for rabies vaccination and, where indicated, rabies immunoglobulin.
AWARE encourages communities, particularly parents and children, to stay informed, avoid unsafe contact with stray or unfamiliar animals, vaccinate dogs against rabies, and seek prompt medical attention after any suspected exposure.

At Aawaz Umerkot Melo 2026, Ms. Rehana Fateh Khan Khoso shared her personal journey and spoke about her grassroots efforts to promote girls’ education and school enrolment in local communities.

Through enrolment campaigns and direct engagement with families and communities, she has been encouraging parents to enrol their daughters in school, support their education, and help them continue learning without interruption.

🧠 World Mental Health Day 2026 | Umerkot

Mental health is not only an individual concern. It is a family, community and public-health priority that requires greater awareness, timely support, reliable evidence and coordinated action.

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2026, AWARE is organizing a special event in Umerkot on 10 October 2026 to bring attention to mental health challenges and the concerning number of reported su***de cases in District Umerkot.

📊 The data calls for attention: According to the data available with AWARE, 547 su***de deaths were reported in District Umerkot from 2015 to 31 August 2026. During the first eight months of 2026 alone, 66 deaths were reported.

📚 Call for Research Papers, Case Studies & Contributions:
AWARE invites research papers, case studies, research observations and other relevant academic or field-based contributions focusing on mental health issues, su***de and su***de prevention, particularly in the context of District Umerkot.
Mental health professionals, researchers, doctors, psychologists, academics, social workers, journalists, students, civil society organizations and relevant public institutions are encouraged to contribute and participate in this important dialogue.

💬 The event will provide a platform for experts, practitioners, community representatives and young people to discuss the situation, explore contributing factors, identify gaps in mental-health services and consider practical approaches for prevention, referral, psychosocial support and community awareness.

AWARE will recognize individuals and institutions that have made meaningful contributions to mental health, su***de prevention, psychosocial wellbeing and community support in Umerkot through special Recognition Awards.

On World Environmental Health Day, AWARE highlights the inseparable connection between the health of our environment and the health of our communities. Clean air, safe water, proper sanitation, healthy ecosystems and responsible management of waste are not luxuries. They are essential for human health, dignity and a sustainable future.
Climate change, pollution, unsafe water and environmental degradation increasingly affect vulnerable communities. Protecting nature therefore means protecting our health, livelihoods and future generations.
AWARE calls upon communities, institutions and individuals to turn environmental awareness into everyday action: conserve water, reduce pollution and waste, plant and protect trees, promote clean energy, and keep our surroundings healthy.

Mr. Ali Akbar Rahimoo, Executive Director of AWARE, shares his reflections and key messages from AAWAZ UMERKOT MELO 2026, highlighting the importance of social inclusion, youth participation, peace, gender equality, child protection and community awareness.
In his address, he also highlighted Umerkot’s unique geographical and cultural significance, describing it as a centrally located district within Mirpurkhas Division and an important gateway to Thar. With its rich cultural diversity, heritage, local artists and traditions, Umerkot has strong potential to emerge as an important cultural hub of the region.
He emphasised that realising this potential requires collective and sustained efforts by government institutions, the Culture Department, civil society, academia, artists, youth, communities and other stakeholders. Greater investment in cultural spaces, local artists and artisans, heritage, literature and opportunities for young talent can also contribute to tourism, livelihoods and social harmony.
