In light of the steadily increasing prevalence of psychosomatic and lifestyle-related diseases across Sindh, the Sindh Village Development Program (SVDP) successfully carried out a comprehensive Blood Pressure and Diabetes Screening Campaign in Village Bajara, Taluka Sehwan. The initiative was implemented under SVDP’s core sector of Health, Nutrition & Food Security, with the primary objective of strengthening rural healthcare services and promoting early detection of non-communicable diseases.
During the campaign, a total of 1,000 individuals were randomly screened, including 600 women and 400 men. The findings revealed a concerning health situation within the community. According to the screening data, 180 men and 508 women were diagnosed with high blood pressure, while 350 men and 210 women were found to have elevated blood glucose levels indicative of diabetes. In addition, 58 individuals were diagnosed with other medical conditions, including cardiac and renal disorders, high cholesterol, asthma, osteoporosis, and various disabilities.
The screening was conducted by a professional medical team in collaboration with SVDP staff. Participants received free blood pressure and blood sugar testing, and detailed family health histories were recorded to better assess risk factors and patterns of disease within the community. A predefined screening criterion was applied in accordance with the standards of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). As per AKUH guidelines, normal blood pressure is considered 120/80 mmHg, while healthy blood glucose levels range from 80–130 mg/dL (fasting) and less than 180 mg/dL two hours after a meal. All screenings were carried out strictly in line with these standards.
The results indicate that more than half of the screened population is affected by hypertension and diabetes, underscoring a serious public health challenge in Village Bajara. Particularly concerning is the finding that nearly half of those diagnosed are not taking prescribed medications due to financial constraints, highlighting the urgent need for affordable healthcare access and sustained medical support in rural areas.
The data was collected through a structured and comprehensive survey format aimed at developing a detailed Village Health Profile. This profile will serve as a baseline for designing future health interventions, awareness campaigns, and targeted support programs to address preventable lifestyle-related diseases.
SVDP reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in underserved communities through preventive screening, community engagement, and evidence-based planning to ensure long-term health security for rural populations
