Thousands of small raptors luggars, kestrels and merlins are trapped across Pakistan every season, sold cheap to fuel the illegal falcon trade pipeline to the Gulf.

They are the invisible engine of a multi million dollar smuggling network. While eyes stay fixed on prize falcons, these indigenous species disappear in silence.

Bringing trapping into a legal, regulated framework is not about encouraging harvest. It is about controlling the damage documenting numbers, monitoring sites, and turning poachers into accountable stewards.

Because if we keep pretending bans work while airports stay open, we won't just lose falcons.

We will lose our indigenous raptors to a trade we refused to regulate.

Indigenous raptors face threat not from nature, but from illegal trade.

Falcons are trapped by local poachers, then sold to Gulf falconers during hunting camps for houbara. These same migratory falcons provide livelihoods for local communities yet our current system fuels the very illegal trade it claims to oppose. Birds trapped in the wild are smuggled through airports to Gulf countries, where they suddenly become "legal" possessions.

We must ask: why does trapping a falcon remain illegal, while transporting it through an airport makes it acceptable?

For years, wildlife departments have failed to stop poaching. This is not a policy problem with an enforcement solution it is a livelihood problem requiring a community solution. When local economies depend on migratory falcons, prohibition without alternative only drives trade underground.

The only proven path forward is a sustainable wild take program one that safeguards local species, regulates harvest, and formally integrates communities as stewards rather than criminals. All other policies have had decades to succeed. They have not.

It is time to replace failed prohibition with managed sustainability.
