World TB Day 2026: The Ongoing Importance of the Fight Against Tuberculosis

In observance of World TB Day, a solemn awareness walk was conducted at PTP Peshawar, emphasizing the urgent need to address tuberculosis, which continues to be a significant public health concern in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The event took place at Hayatabad Medical Complex, organized by the Provincial TB Control Program in collaboration with various partner organizations, including the Association for Community Development and Greenstar Social Marketing. Health professionals, staff members, and community participants gathered to demonstrate their collective commitment to raising awareness about this critical issue.

The proceedings commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran. Dr. Mudassir, the Provincial Director of the TB Control Program, opened his address by quoting the ayah, “Whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity” (5:32). He emphasized that each present serves as an ambassador for TB awareness and underscored the necessity for collective action and accountability. He noted that tuberculosis not only impacts individual health but also presents a substantial public health threat necessitating united efforts for resolution.

Dr. Akmal Naveed, the Director of the Association for Community Development, addressed the attendees and expressed gratitude to the Provincial TB Control Program for its consistent support. He shared insights into the initiatives undertaken by field teams, which include contact screening, field visits, and chest camps, all geared towards enhancing early detection and treatment of the disease. Dr. Naveed highlighted the potential of social media to broaden outreach and effectively disseminate information on tuberculosis awareness to wider communities.

The walk concluded with participants feeling a renewed sense of responsibility, reinforcing the crucial message that sustained awareness and collaborative efforts are vital in the fight against tuberculosis.

TB is still a serious health challenge in Pakistan. Every year, around 686,000 people fall ill, and nearly 49,000 lives are lost.
The reality is simple: TB is preventable and curable, but only if we act early. Stigma, delayed diagnosis, and lack of awareness continue to hold us back.
Let’s stand together, spread awareness, and support those affected. Early testing can save lives.

An awareness session on World TB Day 2026 was successfully conducted at the Regional Professional Development Centre (RPDC), Laj Bok Haya Serai, Lower Dir. The session was attended by 40 primary school teachers, highlighting the important role educators play in promoting health awareness within communities.
During the session, participants were sensitized about Tuberculosis (TB), its signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and the importance of early diagnosis and complete treatment. The discussion also emphasized the collective responsibility of teachers as community influencers who can help spread accurate information and reduce stigma associated with TB.
Engaging school teachers in such initiatives is vital, as they can transfer this knowledge to students, families, and the wider community, thereby strengthening community awareness and encouraging timely health-seeking behavior.
Through collaborative efforts and sustained awareness, we move closer to the goal of a TB-free Pakistan.
