Malnutrition in Young Children: A Silent Crisis and Our Collective Responsibility۔
By Khanzada Javed Iqbal Khattak۔
The progress of any society depends on its future generations, while the health of those generations is directly linked to their nutritional status. Unfortunately, due to poverty and rising inflation in our country, the nutritional needs of young children are increasingly being neglected. At the same time, cheap but unhealthy food items available in markets such as papad, salty snacks, and various brands of chips are becoming a regular part of children’s daily diet. This trend is not only alarming but is also giving rise to a silent crisis that may pose a serious threat to national health in the future.
Balanced nutrition is essential for the proper physical and mental development of children, including proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients. However, when a large portion of their diet consists of low-quality, artificially flavored foods prepared with substandard oils and chemical additives such as papad, salty snacks, chips, and colorful ice treats sold in streets and markets, the consequences appear in the form of malnutrition, weak immunity, impaired cognitive development, and various diseases. Thus, this issue is no longer individual but a collective health crisis for future generations.
There are several underlying causes of this serious problem.
Foremost among them are poverty and inflation, which have severely affected the purchasing power of the common man. When the head of a household struggles to meet basic necessities, providing balanced nutrition for children becomes a difficult sometimes seemingly impossible task. In such circumstances, cheap and easily available items like chips, papad, and ice treats become a convenient but harmful alternative.
Another major factor is parental negligence and lack of awareness. Many parents give in to their children’s demands or momentary happiness without realizing how these dietary habits can negatively impact their long-term health. Additionally, the lack of awareness at the societal level regarding healthy eating further aggravates the issue.
A third significant reason is the profit-driven approach of certain companies, which target children by producing low-quality products to maximize earnings. Attractive packaging, appealing advertisements, and low prices lure children toward these products, despite their minimal nutritional value. Some experts even describe this trend as a form of “junk addiction,” which gradually deteriorates children’s health.
This situation also reflects governmental negligence. Although food safety authorities exist, their performance often remains questionable. The open sale of substandard food items clearly indicates weak enforcement of regulations.
It is now time to take this issue seriously. The government must enforce strict food quality standards, ban the sale of unhealthy food items around schools and educational institutions, and launch effective public awareness campaigns. Parents, too, must recognize their responsibility and show seriousness in choosing healthy food for their children.
Educational institutions and the media also have a crucial role to play. Schools should educate children about the importance of healthy eating, while the media should highlight this issue and provide intellectual guidance for positive change.
In conclusion, it would not be an exaggeration to say that if we continue to neglect the nutritional needs of our children today, we will face a weak, unhealthy, and unproductive generation tomorrow. Such a generation will struggle to meet modern challenges and may lay the foundation for a fragile and impaired nation a prospect that is truly alarming. Healthy children are the building blocks of a healthy nation, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure a safe, strong, and healthy future for our coming generations.
