As part of Trauma Awareness Week 2026, the team of SMBB Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT), Karachi, successfully conducted an awareness session at Salim Habib University (SHU) under the theme:

“Don’t Be the Victim of Trauma, Be the Preventer of Trauma.”

The interactive sessions aimed to raise awareness among university students about trauma, its impact on individuals and communities, and the importance of prevention, timely intervention, and emergency preparedness.

It featured the following insightful sessions:

🔹 Understanding Trauma in Pakistan — Dr. Abid Abbas Sheikh highlighted the challenges and impact of trauma in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of awareness, preventive measures, and collective responsibility in reducing trauma-related injuries.

🔹 Inside the Emergency Room at SMBB Institute of Trauma — Dr. Beenish Hameed provided insights into the critical role of emergency and trauma care, offering students a closer understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in managing trauma cases and the importance of timely medical attention.

Through this initiative, SMBBIT continues to promote a culture of trauma prevention by engaging young people and encouraging them to become informed, responsible, and proactive members of society. Every informed decision, safety precaution, and timely response can help prevent injuries and save lives.

The Pre-Trauma Awareness Week 2026 workshop on “General Management of Orthopedic Trauma & Plaster Application” was successfully conducted at the Trauma & Emergency Response Centre (T&ERC), Larkana, as part of the Pre-Trauma Awareness Week initiative by SMBB Institute of Trauma.

The hands-on workshop focused on strengthening practical skills in the initial assessment and management of orthopedic trauma, fracture stabilization, and plaster application techniques. It provided orthopedic specialists, residents, emergency room medical officers, and trauma nurses with valuable opportunities for practical learning and knowledge sharing to enhance their preparedness in managing orthopedic injuries and improving patient outcomes.

The Pre-Trauma Awareness Week 2026 workshop on “MLC Documentation & Referral Protocol: Role of E-FAST in Traumatic Patients” was successfully conducted at the Trauma & Emergency Response Centre (T&ERC), Sukkur, as part of Trauma Awareness Week 2026, an awareness initiative by the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT).

The workshop focused on the importance of medico-legal documentation, effective referral protocols, and the role of E-FAST in the assessment and management of trauma patients, strengthening clinical knowledge and emergency care practices among healthcare professionals.

The Pre-Trauma Awareness Week 2026 session on, “Invisible Wounds: Recognizing Trauma, Understanding PTSD & Supporting Recovery,” was successfully conducted at the SMBB Institute of Trauma, Karachi, as part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to promote trauma awareness and strengthen holistic patient care.

Organized by the Department of Mental Health & Rehabilitation, the session highlighted the often-overlooked psychological impact of traumatic experiences, the importance of recognizing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the role of timely psychological support in the recovery process. The session emphasized the need to address not only the physical injuries caused by trauma but also the invisible emotional and psychological wounds that can affect survivors long after the incident.

Healthcare professionals from T&ERC Larkana and T&ERC Sukkur also participated in the session via video link, fostering shared learning and strengthening collaboration across SMBBIT’s trauma care network.

The Tendon Repair Hands-on Workshop was successfully conducted as part of Pre-Trauma Awareness Week 2026 at SMBB Institute of Trauma, Karachi.

Organized by the Department of Plastic Surgery, the CME-accredited session gave residents, medical officers, house officers and medical & allied health students practical, supervised training in tendon repair techniques. Hand injuries are common in trauma, and early, skilled repair plays a key role in restoring function and quality of life for patients.

The workshop was also a step toward building trauma care skills and awareness among the next generation of healthcare professionals.
