The Pakistan Association for Eastern Medicine (PAEM), in collaboration with Hamdard Foundation Pakistan (HFP), organised a special scientific seminar titled “Tazkar-e-Hikmat” yesterday at Naimat Begum Hamdard University Hospital to mark World Hepatitis Day.

KARACHI July 31(PR): The Pakistan Association for Eastern Medicine (PAEM), in collaboration with Hamdard Foundation Pakistan (HFP), organised a special scientific seminar titled “Tazkar-e-Hikmat” yesterday at Naimat Begum Hamdard University Hospital to mark World Hepatitis Day. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the increasing number of hepatitis cases in Pakistan. A large number of experts in Unani and modern medicine, teachers, physicians, researchers, and students attended the event. The President of HFP, Ms Sadia Rashid, was the chief guest.
Guest speaker Dr Hakim Syed Zahoor-ul-Hasan Zaidi, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Eastern Medicine, Hamdard University, presented his research on hepatitis. He said that hepatitis is a silent but highly dangerous disease. Controlling it requires not only proper treatment but also early diagnosis, preventive measures, public awareness, and a coordinated strategy. There are five main types of hepatitis: A, B, C, D, and E. Each type differs in its mode of transmission, symptoms, and treatment. Hepatitis A and E usually spread through contaminated food and water, while hepatitis B, C, and D are mainly transmitted through infected blood, unsafe injections, unsterilised medical equipment, blood transfusions, and certain other sources.
He said that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), millions of people around the world are living with hepatitis B and C, while many remain unaware that they are infected. This is why the WHO has set a target to eliminate hepatitis by 2030, with early diagnosis, vaccination, effective treatment, and public awareness identified as the key pillars of this effort. Pakistan is among the countries carrying a high burden of hepatitis B and C. The rising number of hepatitis C cases in the country is mainly due to unsafe injections, unsterilised medical and dental equipment, transfusion of contaminated blood, poor hygiene and sanitation, and a lack of public awareness about the disease. The spread of hepatitis can be prevented through the use of safe injections, proper screening of blood, vaccination, access to clean drinking water, the use of sterilised medical equipment, and continuous public awareness campaigns. With effective preventive measures, the spread of the disease can be significantly reduced.
He further said that a number of research studies in Unani medicine have highlighted its hepatoprotective potential. Hamdard University and other institutions have completed several PhD, MPhil, and research projects on the subject, assessing the effectiveness of traditional medicines in protecting liver function. Stronger scientific evidence, high-quality clinical research, and further studies based on the principles of ‘Evidence-Based Medicine’ are essential for the wider international acceptance of traditional medicines.
He added that practitioners of Unani medicine can play an important role in primary healthcare, particularly in rural and remote areas where access to basic health services is limited. If properly trained, Unani medicine graduates are given suitable opportunities within the national healthcare system, they can make a valuable contribution to the prevention of liver diseases, early diagnosis, public awareness, and the management of other non-communicable diseases.
Professor Dr Hakim Abdul Hanan, President of PAEM, said that PAEM’s mission is not only to provide treatment but also to promote prevention, education, research, and public awareness to help build a healthier society. He reaffirmed Hamdard Pakistan’s commitment to continuing to organise scientific seminars and public awareness programmes on health-related issues. He said these initiatives aim to support the early prevention of diseases and encourage healthier lifestyles, enabling Hamdard to continue making a meaningful contribution to public health.
