KARACHI: The 88th birthday of Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar Ahmed, the esteemed Founder and President of Elza Retina Welfare Organization (ERWO), was celebrated today at the organization’s office in Karachi.
The staff of ERWO organized a graceful ceremony to honor Dr. Mukhtar on this special occasion. Members of the Governing Body, along with distinguished guests, attended the event and offered heartfelt prayers for Dr. Mukhtar’s continued good health and long life.
Dr. Mukhtar holds the distinction of being Pakistan’s first qualified retina surgeon. In recognition of his lifelong dedication and pioneering contributions, he has been honored with the Presidential “Pride of Performance Award”, as well as numerous other national and international awards.
Participants paid rich tribute to Dr. Mukhtar’s exceptional services in the fields of medicine and social welfare. They also expressed their hopes for the organization’s further growth and success under his visionary leadership. www.erwoeye.org

The idea of Elza Retina Welfare Organization (ERWO) was conceived by Pakistan’s eminent eye surgeon Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed.
Mr. Abdul Qadir Memon and Khawaja Mazher-ud-din were the first to steer ERWO in its initial stages. Dr. Mukhtar is recipient of Pride of Performance, Life Time Achievement and living legend awards in recognition of his humanitarian services. ERWO was founded in 2017 and registered as an NPO/NGO on 10th October 2017. It started its mission to provide free treatment of the eye diseases for poor patients, with priority for the retinal diseases. ERWO treats all those diseases which can cause blindness, for example cataract, glaucoma, corneal disease, squint, trauma and tumors.
YEAR 2O17:
Mr Muhammad Ali an eminent lawyer, helped ERWO getting registered hence putting it on the roadmap. A plot of land measuring about 4000sq yds in Nawabshah was donated by Tariq Masood Arain and Arshad Awan. The boundary wall was completed in the same year.
YEAR 2018:
Construction of the (Phase 1) hospital was started. An area of 4000sq/ft. was built to accommodate the clinics and the operation theater.
YEAR 2019:
On the 1st of September, the hospital was inaugurated. Outpatients’ treatment and day care surgery was started. Within three months, by God’s blessing, there was a 30 + inflow daily inpatients.
YEAR 2020
Within three months of this year the number of patients increased to 50+ on a daily basis. Over a hundred and fifty operations have been carried out since inauguration.
In view of growing demand, another floor is currently being added and is almost completed. Estimated complete completion time is Year 2020.
ERWO has been registered in the USA as charity. Thanks to the endless efforts of Dr.abdul Rashid who is raising funds for ERWO as well.
We are in the final stage of registration of ERWO in the UK.
We have been listed with the Economic Affair Division for registration in order received foreign funds.
Since 10th October, 2017 ERWO has screened patients in 25 eye camps, mostly in poor communities.
We have done Vitreoretinal operations, phaco surgeries for cataract, glaucoma, corneal transplants, Lasers and anti VEGF injections worth millions of rupees.
Looking at the performance of past 6 months since the inauguration all the indications are that ERWO is offering a state of the art service and destined to grow fast to reach the unreached to help people to see the world.
