Monis Rahman is a Pakistani internet entrepreneur, venture capitalist and businessman.[1] Rahman is the co-founder and executive chairman of Naseeb Networks, Inc.[2] a business-oriented social network used primarily for online job recruiting.[3] Rahman has been listed among the top entrepreneurs of 21st century several times.
Monis Rehman in an interview to TechJuice revealed his secret of raising investments saying that they were not looking for investments initially. He added, “We were profitable, as we were growing fast. But then the offers started coming in and we started considering the possibilities. We were very prudent when it came to spending so our burn rates were quite low too.
We finally decided to take funding from some very well respected VCs in the Silicon Valley (Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) and E-Planet Capital, the same VC who invested in Skype, Hotmail, and Baidu).”
Though Rozee.pk has secured funding not once but thrice, he still advised budding entrepreneurs that they should not look for investment right away. He elaborated saying that the goal should not be funding but making a viable business which creates value even at a very small scale.
He said, “So start lean, show success in terms of leads, revenue, whatever your key metric is. Money will eventually find you. A funny thing about money is, that it will decide where it wants to go. You can’t decide where the money should go. What you can do, is to build the best start up you can which creates value for customers. Something that generates ROI. And if you’ve got positive ROI, investment will follow you and money will come.”

A recent graduate of the Lahore School of Economics, Muhammad Amin, has founded Payload – an app that is introducing Bitcoin technology to Pakistani users. Bitcoin is a type of digital currency used to verify and transfer funds. With $121 million worth of transactions taking place through Bitcoin every day, the technology is fast becoming a reliable method of transaction for individuals and businesses worldwide. And the best thing about this system is that it’s foolproof – it cannot be hacked. It's fast and cheap, with minimal transnational fee.
Pakistan is a predominantly cash economy, where many people are not comfortable making payments via credit cards which makes Payload extremely relevant here. The start-up is planning to create awareness drives for university students to educate them about this improved way of transacting.

Recently the Pakistani community found out that one of their own is making waves in Hollywood as an accomplished visual artist. And not only that but she also happens to be the daughter of Pakistani musical maestro Attaullah Khan.

She is Laraib Atta. And she has worked on visual effects on X-Men, Godzilla, Gravity, the Chronicles of Narnia, 10,000 BC, Prince of Persia and Sweeney Todd to name a few.

Laraib Atta worked on visual effects for X-Men, Godzilla, Gravity, the Chronicles of Narnia, 10,000 BC, Prince of Persia and Sweeney Todd to name a few.
Who knew that Aslan from Narnia was created by a team of animators that included a Pakistani too?

Laraib Atta was 19 when she started working in Hollywood as Pakistan’s youngest and arguably the first visual effect artist from our country to do so.
She proved herself by first working on advertisements for Disney, Rolling Stones and George Michael. High profile global events like the Olympics in China and the Nike Football promo were also worked on by Laraib, serving as a testimony to her world-class skills and talent as a creative visual artist.
Currently she’s employed at the Imasblue and Glassworks Barcelona (Spain), after previously working at the BBC Television center in London, SKY and MPC, amongst others.

A movie without a visual artist nowadays is simply unheard of, at least in Hollywood where most films (especially tentpole blockbusters) has a ton of animations, special effects and CGI in it.

Think the digitally recreated environments and natural flora and fauna in Avatar. Think the mind-blowing transformations of Autobots and Decepticons in Transformers.

Think Arnold’s Terminator design. These are things that are made possible by the best imaginations more than the software and hardware tools that goes into creating them. People like Laraib Atta and Mir Zafar Ali (Frozen, The Golden Compass, and Life of Pi) have done Pakistan proud in this respect with their contributions to visual effects.

Laraib Atta’s contribution is nothing short of marvelous. And we’re not even talking about her visual artist work at the moment.
When people from the West think about Pakistan, generally speaking, they see a country that is perpetually in chaos and turmoil. And then they come into contact with people like Laraib, who challenge every preconceived notions that foreigners might have about our country.

Laraib’s work is fantastic no doubt and on top of that, she’s serving as an ambassador for a more vibrant, progressive and ready-for-the-future Pakistan. Her work and laurels go a long way in challenging people’s perceptions of Pakistan for the better.

There is trouble at home no doubt, which makes one lose hope. But then, out of blue, in spite of all the morass that we’ve become so accustomed to seeing and experiencing, it’s always a pleasant surprise when one of our own makes it to the world stage for all the right reasons.

Here’s to hoping Laraib Atta continues to work on multi-million dollar films and pave the way for more Pakistani girls to take up a career in VFX.

Yousuf Bashir Qureshi is a walking, talking dichotomy. A contradiction, a split, a disunion, maybe in the most beautiful kind of way. Go back 20 years and his father ships him to a cadet boarding school outside Karachi. He is the macho kid, the athletic, soccer playing angry boy who beats up anyone who dares stand up to him. He is also the proud president of the Biological Collections Club, a group of testosterone-filled boys who catch, kill and stuff animals. In his free time though, Qureshi makes flowers out of silk, crepe, glass, anything beautiful he can find. Boys laugh at him, but he still goes on to start his own flower-making club. Fast forward 10 years and Qureshi is a sophomore in college, where he collects weapons, breeds snakes in his dorm room and woos women. In the evenings though, he dons a pair of tights and heads to a ballet class to practice his pirouette. One summer he tours all over the US with his ballet group when a local newspaper takes a picture of him prancing across stage. He cuts the article out and mails the picture to his father, a tough Punjabi landlord. Five years after that, Qureshi, who has started designing clothes, moves to Santa Monica, L.A, where he is discovered by Sheryl Crow, Rachel Hunter and Madonna. He is pursued by high-end labels like Givenchy and Christian Lacroix, but comes running back home to help his father govern their lands and farm. Come back to present day Karachi and you will see that like his personality, everything that surrounds him mirrors his contradictions. On one side of his chic boutique is a rack lined with striking kurtas in bold strips of colour, and on the other are simple, elegant outfits all in the same shade of white.
He ended up creating the YBQ Concept Studio, which is located in the Artists Commune. The large warehouse space that he owns near Karachi’s industrial centre has been transformed into a powerhouse of sorts. It contains the commune, a space for events, art exhibitions, performances etc. It includes the YBQ design studio, where he designs everything from logos to furniture, the YBQ printing press, the YBQ photo studio and a salon run by Nabila.
Indeed, he is an Artist for sure!

An animal lover, Junaid Jimmy has brought the concept of “Zoo to Home”, by bringing the wildlife as lively as possible in front of the world. Be it reptiles or birds, he deals with all sorts of animals and loves them unconditionally. Having a proper house for them to be kept safe and with all the licenses, he keeps his beloved animals at his home on Super Highway.
He deals in all kinds of pets, provides animals on rent, allows photography with pets, arranges pet shows and also deals in export/import of the animals. He has also been approached by number of people to rescue the animals, since he has a link to the vets and knows how to care for the animals himself. He thinks that animals are the best friends one could ever have, since they neither complain nor do they backbite!
