The activism of persons with disabilities on behalf of themselves and their peers was both the seed of the independent living movement and the force that continues to fuel it. Independent living emerged as a concept in the 1960s with the creation of self-help networks among individuals with severe disabilities who were attempting to live in the community
The Independent Living philosophy asserts that everyone has the potential to live more independently and all persons with disabilities, need to be enabled to exercise maximum control over their lives. The overall goal of this philosophy is – to maximize the independence and participation of disabled persons in their communities. In order to achieve this goal, hundreds of Independent Living Centers are currently working with many branches around the world. Introducing the IL philosophy in Pakistan, Disabled Welfare Association (DWA) established an IL Center in Karachi.
