IEEE PES Karachi Chapter Executes Project for Flood-Affected Communities
The IEEE PES Karachi Chapter has always been working proactively for the betterment of society. Continuing this tradition, a project titled โSolar Energy Training & Panels for Flood-Affected Communitiesโ, funded by the IEEE PES Humanitarian Activity Committee (PES-HAC) under the 2023 Humanitarian Technology Project Design and Implementation (HTPDI) initiative, amounting to USD 1,960, was executed during November โ December 2024 near Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan.
In this project, solar panels, controllers, and battery backups were provided to approximately 20 families severely affected by the floods. These solar systems were installed to power essential devices such as light bulbs and small DC fans.
The project also included training sessions for community members and students on solar technology, energy-saving techniques, and system maintenance โ enabling them to independently manage and maximize the use of the solar systems.
As part of the same initiative, an activity titled โWorkshop on Health & Safetyโ was conducted by Mr. Tareq Moeen (Founder & CEO, Care Wing) at Hamdard University Karachi. Hands-on training in the use of fire extinguishers was provided, along with awareness on fire hazards, followed by an evacuation drill to ensure preparedness in case of emergencies.
The project was led by Dr. Mahesh Kumar (Academic Coordinator, IEEE PES Karachi Chapter), with Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan (Secretary, IEEE PES Karachi Chapter) serving as Project Mentor. Main Team Members Included, Engr. Muzammil A. Qazi, Muhammad Taha Memon, Muhammad Bilal Khan, Syed Hunain Ahmed Zaidi. This community service activity was carried out in collaboration with:
