Israel has launched a major offensive on Gaza City, marking one of the largest escalations of the war. The operation, officially beginning on August 20, involves tens of thousands of reservists and heavy bombardments targeting key neighborhoods. Early advances focus on seizing the city’s outskirts, but humanitarian conditions are rapidly deteriorating. The UN warns of mass civilian casualties, with famine and displacement already widespread. Hamas has signaled conditional acceptance of a 60-day ceasefire, including partial hostage release, though Israel has yet to formally respond. International condemnation has been swift, with the UN, Red Cross, and several countries calling the offensive “intolerable” and urging an immediate ceasefire.
The fighting follows months of urban clashes in Gaza, including the destructive Shuja’iyya campaign earlier this year. As the battle intensifies, Gaza faces catastrophic human costs, while diplomatic pressure mounts on Israel to halt its advance.
