Celebrating Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with Pride, Unity and a Commitment to Climate Action!

The 79th Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated with great national spirit and enthusiasm at Chando Thalay, Sub-Division Daghoni, District Ghanche. The event was organized by the Mountain and Glacier Protection Organization (MGPO) with the support of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF).

The ceremony was graced by Assistant Commissioner Daghoni, Mr. Iftikhar Ali, as the Chief Guest, along with Professor Dr. Saqib Jafri from City University of London, community elders, members and other distinguished guests.

On this occasion, the Glass House and Solar Dryer established under the Living Lab initiative, with the collaboration of City University of London, were officially inaugurated marking another important step towards climate-smart agriculture, food security, sustainable livelihoods and stronger community resilience in the mountain communities of Gilgit-Baltistan. 🌱🏔️

As we celebrate the freedom of our beloved Pakistan, we renew our commitment to protecting our mountains, glaciers, water resources and environment for a sustainable and resilient future.

🇵🇰 Celebrating Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day | Village Chandu, UC Thalay, District Ghanche

MGPO, with the support of PPAF, proudly celebrated Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day at Village Chandu, UC Thalay, District Ghanche, Gilgit-Baltistan, in connection with the United Nations Decade of Action for Cryosphere Sciences (2025–2034).

The National Day celebration was graced by the presence of Honorable Assistant Commissioner, Sub-Division Daghoni, Mr. Iftikhar Ali, along with MGPO representatives, students, and community members.

The event featured the National Anthem, national songs, and speeches honoring the heroes of Pakistan, while highlighting the importance of protecting our mountains, glaciers, and water resources. The celebration reaffirmed our shared commitment to building resilient, sustainable, and climate-smart mountain communities.

وطنِ عزیز پاکستان کا 79واں یومِ آزادی ضلع گانچھے کے گاؤں چندو تھلے، سب ڈویژن ڈغونی میں بھی قومی جوش و جذبے کے ساتھ منایا گیا۔ تقریب کا انعقاد ماؤنٹین اینڈ گلیشر پروٹیکشن آرگنائزیشن (MGPO) نے کیا، جبکہ اس تقریب کو پاکستان پاورٹی ایلیویشن فنڈ (PPAF) کے تعاون سے منعقد کیا گیا۔
تقریب کے مہمانِ خصوصی اسسٹنٹ کمشنر ڈغونی، افتخار علی صاحب تھے، جبکہ سٹی یونیورسٹی آف لندن کے پروفیسر ڈاکٹر ثاقب جعفری سمیت علاقے کے عمائدین، کمیونٹی ممبران اور دیگر معززین نے بھی شرکت کی۔

تقریب سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے ماؤنٹین اینڈ گلیشر پروٹیکشن آرگنائزیشن کے ڈائریکٹر ہارون اشرف نے قوم کو یومِ آزادی کی مبارکباد پیش کی اور پاکستان کی آزادی کے حصول میں ہمارے بزرگوں کی قربانیوں کو خراجِ تحسین پیش کیا۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ آزادی صرف ایک جشن کا نام نہیں بلکہ اپنے ملک، معاشرے اور ماحول کے تحفظ کی ذمہ داری کا بھی تقاضا کرتی ہے۔

انہوں نے ماحولیاتی تبدیلی، آلودگی اور قدرتی وسائل کے تحفظ کی اہمیت پر روشنی ڈالتے ہوئے کہا کہ بالخصوص پہاڑی علاقوں میں رہنے والی کمیونٹیز ماحولیاتی تبدیلی کے اثرات سے براہِ راست متاثر ہو رہی ہیں، اس لیے ہر فرد کو ماحول کے تحفظ میں اپنا کردار ادا کرنا ہوگا۔

ہارون اشرف نے اقوامِ متحدہ کے Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences کا حوالہ دیتے ہوئے کہا کہ MGPO علاقے میں گلیشیئرز، پانی کے وسائل، زراعت اور ماحولیاتی تحفظ کے حوالے سے عملی اقدامات کر رہی ہے۔ انہوں نے بتایا کہ Living Lab کے تحت چندوتھلے میں کمیونٹی کو Glass House اور Solar Dryer فراہم کیے گئے ہیں، جن کا مقصد مقامی سطح پر موسمیاتی تبدیلی سے ہم آہنگ زرعی طریقوں کو فروغ دینا، خوراک کے تحفظ اور کمیونٹی کی معاشی و ماحولیاتی لچک کو بہتر بنانا ہے۔

اس موقع پر مہمانِ خصوصی اسسٹنٹ کمشنر ڈغونی افتخار علی صاحب نے اپنے خطاب میں یومِ آزادی کے موقع پر عوام کو مبارکباد پیش کی اور MGPO کی جانب سے علاقے میں ماحولیاتی تحفظ، موسمیاتی تبدیلی سے نمٹنے اور کمیونٹی کی ترقی کے لیے کی جانے والی کوششوں کو سراہا۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ مقامی سطح پر ایسے اقدامات نہ صرف ماحول کے تحفظ میں مددگار ہیں بلکہ علاقے کے لوگوں کے لیے روزگار اور پائیدار ترقی کے نئے مواقع بھی پیدا کر سکتے ہیں۔

بعد ازاں اسسٹنٹ کمشنر افتخار علی صاحب نے Glass House اور Solar Dryer کا افتتاح کیا۔ اس موقع پر MGPO کی جانب سے انہیں ان منصوبوں کی افادیت، استعمال اور کمیونٹی کے لیے ان کے ممکنہ فوائد کے بارے میں تفصیلی بریفنگ دی گئی۔ یہ سہولیات سٹی یونیورسٹی آف لندن کے تعاون سے قائم کی گئی ہیں۔

تقریب کے اختتام پر پاکستان کی سلامتی، خوشحالی اور ترقی کے لیے خصوصی دعا کی گئی۔ شرکاء نے اس عزم کا اظہار کیا کہ یومِ آزادی کے جذبے کو برقرار رکھتے ہوئے وہ اپنے علاقے کے قدرتی وسائل، پہاڑوں، گلیشیئرز اور ماحول کے تحفظ کے لیے اپنا بھرپور کردار ادا کریں گے۔

🇵🇰 Celebrating Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day Rooted in Resilience, Looking Toward the Future 🏔️

MGPO, with the support of PPAF and in collaboration with Government Girls Degree College, Skardu, successfully organized an academic celebration marking Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day in connection with the UN Decade of Action for Cryosphere Sciences (2025–2034).
The event brought together students, faculty, government representatives, and subject experts for a meaningful reflection on national identity, resilience, and environmental responsibility, spotlighting the critical role of Gilgit-Baltistan’s glaciers, snow, and permafrost in sustaining Pakistan’s water security, agriculture, and mountain livelihoods.
Through an engaging panel discussion, and special remarks from distinguished guests, participants explored the intersection of climate science, Climate Smart agriculture, Indigenous knowledge, and Nature-based Solutions and celebrated the role of women and youth as emerging climate leaders in our mountain communities.

As we mark 79 years of independence, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting Gilgit-Baltistan’s glaciers, safeguarding not just our region’s future, but Pakistan’s water security for generations to come.
