Mountain Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC) | Launch Day Highlights

The Mountain and Glacier Protection Organization (MGPO) successfully conducted a one-day interactive training and engagement session to formally launch the Mountain Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC).

Representatives from ECO ARTISAN, ECO ESSENCE, SHELEADS, YANG Organization (Skardu Chapter), Baltistan Cultural Development Foundation (BCDF), and GB Climate Watch (A Digital Climate Advocacy and Research Hub) actively participated in the session.

The programme featured registration and networking, welcome remarks, an introduction to MGPO’s mandate and climate programmes, and in-depth discussions on the climate and glacier context of Gilgit-Baltistan, the rationale behind MYCC, and the role of youth leadership in advancing SDG 13.

Participants engaged in structured discussions on the coalition’s structure, coordination mechanisms, roles and responsibilities, terms of engagement, and future roadmap. A group exercise provided an opportunity to collectively develop an effective youth climate coalition model, followed by presentations, reflections, and interactive discussion.

The session concluded with the confirmation of organizational focal persons, agreement on coordination and reporting mechanisms, and a clear action plan for the way forward.

MYCC Aims To:

1. Mobilize youth across Baltistan for coordinated climate action and environmental stewardship.
2. Strengthen youth capacity in climate change, disaster risk reduction, and leadership.
3. Promote community-based climate adaptation, ecosystem conservation, and disaster preparedness.
4. Build partnerships with government, academia, civil society, and development partners.
5. Enhance youth participation in climate policy, advocacy, and decision-making.
6. Establish a Climate Volunteer Task Force to support climate-related emergencies and strengthen community resilience.
7. Facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking among member organizations.
8. Monitor, document, and communicate the coalition’s achievements and impact.

With its formal launch completed, MYCC now moves from orientation to coordinated field action, strengthening youth-led climate engagement and collective action across the mountain communities of Gilgit-Baltistan.

At Major Irshad Shaheed Model Boys High School, Khaplu, a dignified ceremony was held to commemorate the 79th Independence Day of Pakistan.

The ceremony was presided over by renowned social personality and former Headmaster Mr. Muhammad Bashir, while former Headmaster Mr. Muhammad Jafar attended as the Chief Guest. Renowned poet Mr. Khadim Noori graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

The Principal of the school, Mr. Muhammad Hussain, performed the hosting duties. A large number of teachers and students also participated in the ceremony with great national enthusiasm and patriotic spirit.

On this occasion, the speakers paid rich tribute to the great sacrifices of our forefathers in the struggle for the freedom of our beloved homeland. They also highlighted the importance of unity and patriotism, emphasizing the need to promote harmony, solidarity, and mutual understanding in society.

The ceremony concluded with special prayers for the progress, prosperity, peace, and continued glory of Pakistan.
