Last weekend, Safari Club International (SCI) and the Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) attended the 72nd General Assembly of the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation in Vienna, Austria.

Over the course of two days, Dr. Chris Comer, Jeremy Clare, and Juan Magaz, alongside hundreds of international delegates, engaged in substantive discussions centered on the evolving concept of the “wildlife economy.” The Assembly also facilitated a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings, reinforcing its role as a key platform for collaboration among global conservation stakeholders.

During the General Assembly, Luis de la Peña was elected as the new President of CIC. SCI extends its sincere congratulations to Mr. de la Peña and expresses its deep appreciation to outgoing President Philipp Harmer for his leadership and partnership over the past six years.

SCI and CIC continue to work closely on shared priorities, particularly within the framework of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, and have explored opportunities to further strengthen cooperation, including initiatives in European conservation projects.

The Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Malindi Sikumba, MP, has issued three Statutory Instruments to enhance wildlife conservation, protect heritage sites, and support sustainable tourism development in Zambia.

Key measures include the declaration of Mutinondo Falls in Muchinga Province as a National Monument, improved regulations governing lion and leopard trophy hunting, and strengthened CITES‑related controls on wildlife trade.

Together, these actions will help safeguard biodiversity, promote lesser‑known destinations, boost investor and tourist confidence, and support community livelihoods through eco‑tourism.
The Ministry of Tourism remains committed to protecting Zambia’s natural assets while advancing responsible tourism growth.
