Bridging the Gap
Police officers are often the first to arrive at emergency scenes. To strengthen their skills as first responders, Pakistan Relief IDEA is conducting Emergency First Aid Training (EFAT) at the Capital Police College, Islamabad.

The EFAT/S program forms a vital part of our "Resilient Capital Initiative", dedicated to enhancing both community and institutional resilience against emergencies and disasters. The initiative integrates key areas such as Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM), Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and broader aspects of DMC.

Many people tend to shrug off fire safety and prevention tips. But you have to remember that fires are unpredictable. Emergency can strike anytime and anywhere, especially when you least expect it. Having basic fire safety measures put in place both at home and work can one day be the difference between life and death. Review the fire prevention tips below together with your family and friends. By doing so, you’ll help create a safer place for you and your community to live.

Fire Safety Rules

Prevention (At Home & Work)

• Cooking:
Never leave cooking unattended; keep cooking areas clear; turn pot handles inward; maintain a 3-foot "kid-free" zone around stoves.

• Electrical Safety:
Don't overload outlets; replace frayed cords; unplug smoking appliances; keep cords off rugs.

• Heating:
Keep space heaters 3 feet from combustibles; turn them off when leaving or sleeping.

• Flammables:
Store properly and away from heat sources; keep matches/lighters away from children; use metal ashtrays.

• Alarms:
Install smoke alarms on every level and inside/outside sleeping areas; test them monthly.
Preparedness & Response (During a Fire)

• Smoke Alarms:
If you hear it, get out immediately.

• Evacuation:
Have a plan with two ways out of every room; stay calm; crawl low to avoid smoke; feel doors for heat before opening.

• Exits:
Close doors behind you to slow fire spread; use stairs, not elevators; have escape ladders for upper floors.

• Once Out:
Go to your meeting spot; stay out; call for help (e.g., 911, 15, 16 or 1122) from a safe location.

• If Trapped:
Cover your face with a wet cloth if possible; stay low; signal firefighters.

Specific Actions
• Stop, Drop, Roll: If your clothes catch fire, stop where you are, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands; roll over and over until the flames are out.

• Fire Extinguishers:
Keep them accessible (kitchen, garage) and learn how to use them.

• Teach Kids:
Teach them fire safety rules and how to call for help.

Please keep the roads and access ways clear for the responders and avoid gatherings

"Pakistan is proud of her youth, particularly the students who have always been in the forefront in the hour of trail and need. You are the nation-builders of tomorrow and you must fully equip yourself by discipline, education and training for the arduous task lying ahead of you. You should realize the magnitude of your responsibility and be ready to bear it".

As we observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we reflect on this year's theme, 'Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,' highlighting the importance of investing in preparedness, prevention, and resilience over responding to disasters after they occur.

Commenced in 1989, this day was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to foster a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction.

When asked about their most pressing needs, children replied that they desperately need food, while women emphasized the need for household articles and support to rebuild their homes.

The mental trauma and fear of further flooding are likely to linger for months, exacerbated by forecasts of additional rainfall. The affected communities are in urgent need of sustained support to recover and rebuild.

Our ERT members witnessed the devastating impact firsthand, with women and children traumatized by the loss of their homes, livestock, and crops.

Reaching out to over a hundred flood affected families at or near their doorstep, we distributed hygiene kits in rural Sheikhen, Bhawana, District Chiniot, Punjab.

The area has been severely impacted by three consecutive spells of heavy rains and flash floods, leaving thousands without homes, livelihoods, or access to basic necessities.

The situation is dire, with estimated 4,000 villages badly affected, 3.5 million people suffering, and over a million evacuated by boat or on foot, according to official reports from PDMA Punjab.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the 14 young volunteers from WYP who selflessly supported us in our relief efforts. On September 7, 2025, they played a crucial role in identifying severely affected areas and bravely carried relief goods to remote, inaccessible villages, working against the clock to make a difference.

A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern Afghanistan near midnight on August 31, 2025, triggering several aftershocks. The epicenter was 27 km northeast of Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province's capital, at a shallow depth of 8 km. Severe jolts were felt in Pakistan too.

We are working with our German partners and the Government of Pakistan to assess needs and explore options for humanitarian assistance.

As seen in the illustration, this region is particularly vulnerable due to its mountainous terrain and remote location, approximately 150 km east of Kabul and 75 km west of the Pakistan border.

The quake severely impacted four provinces: Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, and Nuristan. Kunar Province bore the brunt, especially in districts like Chawkay, Nurgal, Chapa Dara, Dara-e-Pech, Watapur, and Asadabad, with:

*Destruction Statistics:*
- At least 5,412 households destroyed
- Several villages completely leveled

*Casualty Numbers:*
- 1,411 reported deaths
- 3,124 injuries, many in critical condition

Rescue efforts are ongoing, complicated by:

*Terrain Challenges:*
- Remote and mountainous areas hinder access
- Road blockages from rubble, landslides, and rocks
- Recent rainfall and floods exacerbate the situation

*Health System Strains:*
- Fragile health infrastructure
- Chronic poverty and limited resources

Thousands of local volunteers are supporting search and rescue operations in these hard-to-reach areas.

Recent floods in Pakistan have had a devastating impact on livestock and wildlife too. Thousands of animals, including cattle, goats, and donkeys, have drowned, while survivors face severe challenges such as starvation due to lack of fodder and the spread of diseases from contaminated water. Wildlife habitats have been destroyed, and many animals are in need of rescue.

How to help water-logged animals:
Please exercise tolerance during the aftermath of floods. If an animal is using your area as a temporary refuge, please allow the livestock, pets and wildlife this small moment’s respite. If possible, inform local authorities of the found animals so that they could be reunited with their owners, as soon as possible.

To help flood-affected animals, provide access to emergency animal feed and safe drinking water, administer essential veterinary care and medicines for disease prevention, if possible.

In response to the disaster, provincial authorities in Punjab have successfully evacuated and relocated approximately 600,000 people and 450,000 animals from inundated areas to safer locations.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), preliminary estimates by the provincial livestock department indicate losses of around Rs1.57 billion due to the floods. The assessment, covering seven affected districts, reports over 5,000 animals and 10,000 poultry birds lost in the disaster.

In view of the Exceptionally High and Very High Flood levels being recorded at upstream locations in Rivers Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej, it is anticipated that these floodwaters will ultimately contribute to rising flows in the River Indus. In this regard NDMA has urged to take following measures ASAP:

Initiate evacuation of vulnerable communities residing along the Katcha areas and low-lying belts of River Indus and its tributaries.

Disseminate timely early warning messages to at-risk populations through local administration, mosques, media and community networks.

Mobilize local volunteers and community-based organizations to support evacuation and relief efforts۔
