"I am just another victim of cyber harassment like every other girl of my age. My story is not much different. It all started when I was in grade 8th, a kid who was not even aware of what social media is. We were on summer vacations, when a friend of mine reached out to me inquiring about my Facebook account. It took me a little while to figure out what she was referring to. She was referring to the Facebook account that used my name, details and pictures. People in my friend circle as well as relatives received inappropriate messages, requests and pictures from my account.
For a moment my legs lost their power to stand leaving my body numb. I was so concerned and worried about for I had no idea how to deal with it. The image of social media and Facebook was so negatively portrayed that it dragged me into depression. Along with mental health problems my academics as well as social life was so disturbed for, I was so traumatized by this event. You might find this incident very normal but it was not. Not for someone like me who belong to a conservative community, aged 13 year and totally unaware of how to tackle such situations. Eventually my friends helped me in getting rid of it but that event taught me the importance of consent and knowledge."

میری کہانی کچھ زیادہ منفرد نہیں بلکہ ہر دوسری لڑکی کی کہانی ہے۔ گلگت بلتستان کے سٹوڈنٹس جب بھی اعلی تعلیم حاصل کرنے کے لیے گلگت بلتستان سے اسلام آباد آتے ہیں تو انہیں کافی مشکلات کا سامنا کرنا پڑتا ہیں۔ ایک دفعہ میں ایک دکان سے اپنے ڈاکومنٹس پرنٹ کروانے کے بعد اپنے اکاؤنٹ کو لاگ آؤٹ کرنا بھول گئی تو اس سے اگلے دن میرے سوشل میڈیا کے سارے اکاؤنٹس کے پاس ورڈ تبدیل کر دیے گئے تھے۔ ہم جب بھی کسی دکان سے اپنی ڈاکومنٹس اور اسائنمنٹس پرنٹ کرواتے ہیں تو ہم اکثر اپنے ای میل login کر کے لاگ آؤٹ کرنا بھول جاتے ہیں یہ بظاہر تو ایک بہت معمولی سا مسئلہ لگتا ہے لیکن آپ کا ای میل اکاونٹ آپ کے سوشل میڈیا اکاؤنٹس سے لنک ہوتا ہے اور اگر یہ کسی غلط انسان کے ہاتھ لگ جائیں تو آپ کے لیے بہت مشکلات پیدا کر سکتا ہے۔ میری سب لڑکیوں سے درخواست ہے کہ ای میل اکاؤنٹ کو استعمال کرنے کے بعد لاگ آؤٹ کریں اور کوشش کریں کہ آپ کے پاس ورڈ دوسرے لوگوں کے براؤزر میں سیو نہ ہو۔

According to a survey, 40 % of female internet users in Pakistan have experienced some kind of harassment via social media platforms and messaging apps like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Facebook messenger, among others. The survey also revealed that despite experiencing online harassment, 72 % of female social media users do not know about cyber harassment laws in Pakistan.
