🌉No Better Classroom Than the Field: Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure for Safer Communities in Charsadda

Planners and designers from government line departments in District Charsadda took part in a hands-on field demonstration, moving from classroom concepts to real infrastructure challenges on the ground.

📍 The demonstration was held at the Qazi Khel Bridge, near Old GTS Adda in Charsadda, where participants evaluated a practical, on-ground infrastructure site firsthand. Using real-world examples, the session illustrated how hybrid engineering and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can be applied in practice to strengthen climate resilience, with particular focus on embankment stabilization and slope stabilization measures. Situated near the Kabul and Swat river systems, Charsadda remains among Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's most flood-prone districts, making such practical, site-based learning essential for protecting roads, bridges, and surrounding settlements.

♻️ Resilient Infrastructure for Safer Communities: Strengthening Institutional Capacity in Charsadda

Helvetas Pakistan concluded a three-day Capacity Development Training for senior planners and designers from government line departments in District Charsadda, held in Peshawar from 28 to 30 July 2026. The training was conducted under the Capacity Development for Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure for Safer Communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The training strengthened participants' technical expertise and practical competencies in climate risk assessment, hydrology, risk-informed infrastructure planning and embankment protection. Beyond conventional flood control measures, the curriculum focused on embedding long-term climate resilience into public infrastructure by integrating hard engineering solutions with Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Situated at the confluence of the Kabul and Swat rivers, Charsadda is among Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's most flood-prone districts, as seen in the devastating floods of 2010 and 2022. Particular attention was given to embankment stabilization, riverbank protection, and safeguarding roads, bridges, irrigation systems and settlements from recurring riverine flooding.

👥 The training brought together district-level government officials who oversee public infrastructure development, empowering key decision-makers to integrate climate and disaster risk criteria throughout every stage of the project lifecycle, from feasibility and design to construction and ongoing maintenance.

🦺 From Training to Field Practice: Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure for Safer Communities in D.I. Khan

Dera Ismail Khan, 24 July 2026 - Senior planners and designers from government line departments took part in a hands-on field demonstration, moving from classroom concepts to real infrastructure challenges on the ground.

🌊 The site was Spur No. 21-A, a river training and flood protection structure on the left bank of the Indus River, managed by the Irrigation Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The spur protects the communities of Kokar and Budani from river erosion and flood risk. On site, participants assessed local conditions and identified practical climate-resilient design measures, with particular focus on the Rod Kohi (Sailaba) spate irrigation system and the growing threat of flash floods and hill torrents from the Sulaiman Mountain Range.

Helvetas Pakistan concluded a three-day training for senior planners and designers from government line departments in District Dera Ismail Khan from 22 to 24 July 2026. The training was conducted under the Capacity Development for Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure for Safer Communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The training strengthened participants' technical knowledge and practical skills in climate and disaster risk assessment, hydrological and hydraulic analysis, climate-informed infrastructure planning and design, vulnerability assessment, feasibility studies, inclusive and risk-informed decision-making, embankment protection, drainage design, slope stabilization, erosion and sediment management, and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for resilient infrastructure development.

Given the unique hydro-climatic context of Dera Ismail Khan, special emphasis was placed on the Rod Kohi (Sailaba) spate irrigation system-one of Pakistan's most distinctive indigenous water management systems. Discussions explored how increasing rainfall variability, high-intensity convective storms, flash floods, and hill torrents originating from the Sulaiman Mountain Range are altering runoff regimes and sediment transport dynamics. These changes are increasing the vulnerability of Sailaba irrigation networks, agricultural lands, flood protection embankments, culverts, roads, bridges, water supply systems, and rural settlements.

👥 The training brought together engineers, planners, and technical officials whose decisions directly influence the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of public infrastructure across the district. Strengthening their technical capacity is essential for mainstreaming climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable infrastructure development into future public investments.

🌍 By strengthening technical and institutional capacities, the training supports the integration of climate-resilient and risk-informed approaches into district-level planning and design. This will contribute to more sustainable public investments and help reduce the vulnerability of infrastructure and communities to future climate and disaster risks.

Free Birth Registration Campaign Launched in Peshawar 📜

Under the Inclusive Protection for Vulnerable Children (IPVC) project, a Free Birth Registration Campaign has launched in District Peshawar, supporting every vulnerable child's right to a legal identity through an official birth certificate.

The campaign registered 510+ children in its initial drive and is now rolling out across targeted areas, including VC Wadpagga 02, VC Muhammad Zai 03, and VC Dalazak-II / Bela Niko Khan 04, with further expansion planned to additional Village and Neighbourhood Councils across Peshawar.

🤝 For families who face cost or access barriers to registration, IPVC has came forward to support them in this very essential task.

🏫 A birth certificate is the gateway to protection, schooling, healthcare, and other essential services. This campaign ensures no child is left without that recognition.

Behind Every Child Is a Story Worth Hearing 💙

As part of the Child-to-Child Approach under the Helvetas Inclusive Protection for Vulnerable Children (IPVC) project, funded by Swiss Solidarity, two young volunteers aged 17 and 18 visited project beneficiaries in District Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to listen, learn, and better understand the realities faced by vulnerable children and families.

During the visits, they engaged with children receiving psychosocial support, vocational skills trainees, and families receiving livelihood support through the IPVC project. Beneficiaries openly shared their personal journeys, the challenges they had faced, and how tailored project support was helping them rebuild confidence, develop practical skills, strengthen household resilience, and look towards the protected future with greater hope.

For the young volunteers, the experience was equally powerful. Hearing these stories first-hand opened their eyes to realities they had never previously imagined and inspired a deeper sense of empathy, gratitude, compassion, and social responsibility.

🤝 When young people listen to one another, stories become bridges—building understanding, empathy, and a shared commitment to a more inclusive and supportive society.

Strengthening human rights due diligence in the cotton value chain in Rahim Yar Khan 🌱
Under the EU-funded Capacity-Building for Socially Diligent Agribusinesses (CSDA) Project, HELVETAS Germany and REEDS convened a roundtable discussion with the District Vigilance Committee (DVC), Rahim Yar Khan, bringing together 20 representatives from key government departments and civil society organizations.

Participants included representatives from the Labour & Human Resource Department, Education Department, Punjab Employees Social Security Institution (PESSI), Employees' Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI), Child Protection & Welfare Bureau, Police Department, and CSOs.

The discussion focused on strengthening vigilance and awareness around Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD), relevant EU legislation including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and EU Forced Labour Regulation, as well as Pakistan’s GSP+ commitments, ILO Core Labour Standards, environmental responsibility, and good governance.

A key part of the discussion focused on forced labour, with particular attention to the 11 ILO indicators of forced labour and their relevance to identifying and addressing risks within the cotton value chain.

Mr. Muhammad Jawad, Labour Officer, Labour & Human Resource Department, Rahim Yar Khan, shared updates on departmental progress and the implementation of the Punjab Labour Code 2026, particularly provisions related to Occupational Health and Safety, along with other relevant provincial labour legislation.

Members of the District Vigilance Committee reaffirmed their commitment to promoting labour rights, preventing forced labour, supporting safer workplaces, and contributing to more responsible and sustainable cotton value chains.

🛠️ Skills, Livelihoods and Safer Futures
Under the Helvetas Inclusive Protection for Vulnerable Children (IPVC) project, funded by Swiss Solidarity, a toolkit and livelihood support package distribution ceremony was held at Governor House Peshawar. The event was organized by partner institute Society for Skill Training and Development (SSTD) in collaboration with Helvetas–IPVC.

The event was graced by the presence of the Honourable Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr Faisal Karim Kundi, alongside Dr Arjumand Nizami, Country Director, Helvetas Swiss Pakistan, and Mr Haseeb Khan, Senior Director, SSTD. It brought together representatives from government line departments, civil society organisations, partner institutions, community representatives, legal professionals, media, and trainees who had successfully completed their vocational training.

The ceremony marked an important milestone in supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families with market-relevant skills, practical toolkits, and livelihood opportunities, helping them move towards safer, more dignified, and sustainable pathways to economic resilience and self-reliance.

🤝 Strengthening Collaboration for Quality Technical Education
As part of the service contract “Capacity Development of TVET Institutions in M&E by Piloting the M&E Framework”, implemented by HELVETAS Intercooperation gGmbH, M&E Experts Mr. Irshad Ali and Ms. Samira Qazi, supported by Team Leader Sadaf Abid, together with Mr. Zahoor Hassan, Advisor Monitoring & Evaluation at GIZ, visited the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE).

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Faisal Mehmood, Chairman PBTE, and attended by senior PBTE officials. Discussions focused on strengthening institutional monitoring and evaluation systems, improving data collection and reporting mechanisms, supporting quality assurance processes, and promoting evidence-based decision-making across TVET institutions.

The exchange reaffirmed the shared commitment of PBTE and key sector stakeholders to strengthening the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of technical and vocational education and training in Punjab.

Strengthening Pakistan’s cotton sector for the EU market 🌱
Under the EU-funded Capacity-Building for Socially Diligent Agribusinesses (CSDA) Project, Helvetas, Better Cotton, and REEDS hosted a one-day workshop in Rahim Yar Khan on EU legislation, supply chain traceability, and responsible business conduct.

The workshop brought together 41 participants from 35 ginning factories to build readiness for compliant and traceable cotton supply chains. Sessions covered Better Cotton’s Membership Code of Practice, Traceability Solution, Chain of Custody Standard v1.2, Better Cotton Platform, and key EU requirements including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the EU Forced Labour Regulation.

The workshop also focused on operationalizing Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) and supporting Pakistan’s GSP Plus commitments across the cotton value chain.

As EU due-diligence requirements reshape global sourcing, equipping Rahim Yar Khan’s ginners with the tools to meet these standards is essential to protect market access and promote responsible business practices.
