Once known for its vibrant culture and the joy of monsoon rains, Tharparkar is now facing a growing climate threat. Lightning strikes have transformed rain from a blessing into a source of fear for local communities.
Over the last five years (2019–2023), lightning incidents claimed 98 human lives, injured 33 people, and killed 1,756 animals in the region. Studies also indicate that Thar experiences nearly 100,000 lightning strikes annually, far above the global average. Rising temperatures, stronger storms, deforestation, and land degradation are intensifying this crisis.
In response, Provincial Disaster Management Authority Sindh, Fast Rural Development Program, and Welthungerhilfe have joined hands to strengthen resilience in Tharparkar through its HOIFA project under (TOGETHER) program which includes:
* Community awareness campaigns on lightning safety through radio messeges
* Installation of communal lightning protection systems in 10 hotspot areas of Tharparkar
* Early Warning Systems (EWS) at community and district level
* Capacity building for local responders and communities through trainings and sessions
* Stronger coordination among institutions
This initiative highlights the urgent need for localized, evidence-based climate action. With the right investments in preparedness, innovation, and partnerships, Tharparkar can once again celebrate the rain as a blessing not fear it as a disaster.
