Two rescued snow leopards, currently housed at the Naltar Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Gilgit-Baltistan, have prompted a serious debate after the proposed transfer of these animals to a zoo in Moscow, Russia, raised concerns among conservationists, wildlife experts, and wildlife departments. Critics argue that such a move contradicts both national and international conservation commitments.

The snow leopard, listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List (2017), receives the highest level of legal protection under Pakistan’s wildlife legislation, WWF Pakistan stated. Additionally, it is included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which strictly prohibits international trade except under exceptional, non-commercial circumstances, the statement added.

Wildlife experts oppose transferring snow leopards from Pakistan, noting that the destination country already hosts a larger wild population. They warn this could undermine conservation progress and set a negative precedent. Conservationists recommend that Pakistan strengthen in-situ conservation by improving its rescue center and enhancing local wildlife departments through training and support.

Misgar Valley, nestled in the stunning landscape of Upper Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, breathtaking scenery, and cultural heritage. Among its most iconic wildlife species is the Himalayan Ibex, a majestic wild goat that draws nature enthusiasts and hunters alike. Recently, Mr. Muhammad Hesham Usama Khan made headlines by successfully hunting a Himalayan Ibex with an impressive horn length of 50 inches in this picturesque valley.

The Hunting Expedition:

Significance of the Hunt:
The successful hunt is a notable achievement not only due to the size of the Ibex but also because such specimens are rare in the wild. Misgar Valley's conservation efforts have ensured a sustainable environment for the Ibex population to thrive.
This hunting achievement highlights the region's role in preserving wildlife while also balancing the interests of eco-tourism and local development.
