On Lineage, Regalia, and Fraternal Integrity
In fraternalism, symbols only have weight because of what they represent. A sash, a jewel, a title these are not just decoration. They point to a lineage, a charter, a history of men who upheld a purpose through years of service. That’s why borrowing regalia from other jurisdictions, just to appear older or more legitimate, undermines the very thing it tries to imitate.
Lately, some groups operating under the name “Free Gardeners” have adopted regalia and titles that belong to recognized bodies like the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners and the British Order Ancient Free Gardeners and some terminologies came from IAOFG, But credibility cannot be borrowed. It is earned.
Lineage matters because it creates accountability. When you wear the regalia of an Order, you are making a public claim that you stand under its constitution, its governance, and its traditions. If that claim isn’t true, then you’re misrepresenting yourself to the public and to the brethren who know better. It confuses those seeking the real Order, and it disrespects the men who earned those symbols through service.
There’s also a cost to your own group. Once the mismatch is noticed, trust erodes. Fraternal men talk, and inconsistencies in ritual, regalia, and history are easy to spot. Worse, you rob your own members of a real identity. Instead of building something authentic, you’re wearing a borrowed name and hoping no one asks where it came from.
The honorable path is simpler. If you admire a recognized Order, approach them. Ask about affiliation, recognition, and admission. If your purpose aligns and your men meet the standard, there is a path forward. If it doesn’t, then build your own lineage. Every Order that lasts started with men who had nothing but a charter and a purpose. They created their own symbols, their own reputation, and their own history through work not imitation.
Fraternal integrity means standing on what is yours. Regalia should reflect the truth of who you are, not the illusion of who you wish to be. That is how respect is earned, and how brotherhood endures.
