The Manila Anti-Incinerator Alliance (MAIA) joined the National Anti-Poverty Commission’s learning session on Waste-to-Energy (WTE) for Metro Manila Council Members, held on May 19 at the Parish of the Risen Christ in Tondo, Manila, Philippines.

With NAPC and basic sector representatives engaging more deeply on the issue, there is growing recognition that WTE is not just a waste or energy concern. They expressed concern that WTE projects would economically displace urban poor waste workers from their livelihoods.

Communities closest to proposed WTE facilities must be heard, protected, and meaningfully included in decisions that affect their lives.

There is more solid reason for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to junk the waste incineration project in Smokey Mountain proposed by Phileco through its project company MIEC. Phileco also had other environmental violations in other areas related to its waste services in the past.

Phileco should be held accountable for its negligence to manage the Navotas landfill for more than a decade. Allowing this waste incineration proposed project under Phileco's hand will be tantamount to incentivizing polluters to operate in the waste management system.

Three weeks into the fire at the Navotas landfill, it has become clear that what is happening is the predictable outcome of a long chain of bad decisions, culminating in the failure of a firm called Philippine Ecology Systems Corp.
